This guide answers the most common questions about freezer not freezing with 2026 Twin Cities pricing, brand-specific fixes, and when to call a factory-trained tech.

Quick answer: Freezer warm while the fridge stays cold is rarer and points to a different set of causes than the usual "fridge warm, freezer cold." Likely failures in order: (1) evaporator fan stalled (no cold air being made or moved at the coil), (2) defrost heater stuck on or thermistor reading wrong (slowly warms the freezer), (3) sealed-system / refrigerant leak in the freezer-side circuit (dual-evaporator units), (4) freezer door gasket leaking, (5) air-damper stuck wide open dumping all the cold into the fridge. Most repairs $285–$485; sealed system $485–$925.

Single-evaporator vs dual-evaporator: this changes the diagnosis

Single-evaporator fridges (most standard top-freezer and side-by-side units) cool the freezer first and route some cold to the fridge. If the freezer is warm but the fridge is cold on a single-evap unit, it's almost always a damper stuck open OR a sealed-system fault. Dual-evaporator units (most LG, Samsung, and GE French-door premium models) have separate cooling for each compartment — the freezer can fail independently from a freezer-evap fan, a freezer-side compressor circuit, or the freezer defrost system.

Step 1 — Listen for the evaporator fan

Open the freezer and press the door switch (or tape it down). You should hear a fan running within a few seconds. Silence on a unit that's been closed >5 minutes = stalled fan. $245–$385 installed.

Step 2 — Check the defrost heater

Defrost heaters can fail two ways: open (no defrost, frost builds up and blocks airflow) or stuck closed/runaway (heater stays on, slowly warms the cabinet). A runaway heater is rare but classic — feel the freezer back panel; if it's warm, defrost is stuck on. Replace the defrost thermostat / thermistor and the heater itself.

Step 3 — Damper diagnosis (single-evap units)

On a top-freezer or side-by-side, a stuck-wide-open damper sends all the cold to the fridge and the freezer can't keep up. Listen for the damper motor cycling; if you can hear cycles but the symptom persists, it's mechanically stuck.

Step 4 — Sealed-system / refrigerant leak

If steps 1–3 are clear and the freezer still won't drop below 20°F, the sealed system is suspect. On dual-evap French-door units, a slow leak in the freezer circuit will warm the freezer first while the fridge keeps running. Diagnosis requires gauges and EPA-608 certification; repair is $485–$925.

Step 5 — Door gasket

Walk-in test: close the freezer door on a dollar bill. If it slides out with no drag, the gasket is shot and warm humid air is leaking in continuously. $245–$345 installed.

LG French-door freezer not freezing

LG LFXS / LMXS / LRMVS series with the linear compressor have a known sealed-system failure pattern that throws Er CO or Er CF. The freezer warms first because the dual-evap freezer circuit fails first. If your LG is under 10 years old, check the LG extended compressor warranty before paying for repair.

Samsung French-door freezer warm

Samsung RF / RFG series throw 22 E when the ice-room circulation fan ices over — but a true freezer-warm symptom on these is usually the freezer evap fan (DA31-00146 series) or a frost-blocked evaporator from a failed defrost element.

Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana

On the Whirlpool platform, a freezer-warm symptom is most often the freezer evaporator fan motor (Whirlpool W10188389) or the bi-metal defrost thermostat. We carry both.

Sub-Zero built-ins

Sub-Zero 600 / 700 / Classic series use dual compressors and the freezer compressor can fail independently. Vacuum filter dryer service and a recharge runs $685–$1,250. Replacement built-in units run $9,000+, so the math always favors repair on Sub-Zero.

Why is my freezer warm but my fridge cold?

On a single-evap unit: damper stuck open or a sealed-system fault. On a dual-evap unit (most premium LG, Samsung, GE French-door): the freezer-side evaporator fan, defrost heater, or freezer compressor circuit has failed independently of the fridge side.

What temperature should a freezer be?

0°F is the USDA target for long-term food safety. Anything above 10°F starts losing texture and food quality on frozen meats and prepared foods. If your freezer is reading 25–40°F, food has likely thawed and refrozen — discard anything with ice crystals on the inside of the packaging.

How long can food stay in a freezer that's not freezing?

A full freezer holds safe temperature for ~48 hours if you don't open it. A half-full freezer holds for ~24 hours. Anything that thaws above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be discarded — refreezing doesn't reverse bacterial growth.

How much does it cost to fix a freezer that won't freeze?

Evaporator fan, defrost, or damper: $285–$485 all-in. Sealed-system / compressor work: $485–$925. Sub-Zero rebuilds: $685–$1,250. Every repair includes the flat $149 trip fee (credited toward the repair on approval) and a 1-year warranty.

Is it worth fixing a freezer that won't freeze?

Freezer-only units and built-in fridges: almost always. Standalone French-door units under 10 years old: yes for component repairs ($285–$485). For a 12+ year-old French-door with a sealed-system fault, get a replacement quote alongside the repair quote.
