This guide answers the most common questions about refrigerator not cooling but freezer is with 2026 Twin Cities pricing, brand-specific fixes, and when to call a factory-trained tech.
Quick answer: If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, the cooling system is working — cold air just isn't reaching the fresh-food compartment. In order of likelihood: (1) evaporator fan motor stalled, (2) frost-blocked evaporator from a failed defrost heater, thermistor, or bi-metal, (3) damper stuck closed between freezer and fridge, (4) clogged condenser coils, (5) door gasket leaking warm air. Most repairs land $245–$485 all-in with a 1-year warranty.

How a refrigerator actually cools
Almost every modern refrigerator (top-freezer, French-door, side-by-side) has one cold-source — the evaporator coil behind the freezer back panel — and one evaporator fan that pushes that cold air through a duct into the fresh-food cabinet. A damper controls how much air drops down. When you see a cold freezer but a warm fridge, that single airflow path is failing. Knowing this collapses the diagnosis from "fridge is broken" to "find the airflow leak."
The 7 most common causes (in diagnostic order)
1. Evaporator fan motor stalled. Open the freezer, press the door switch (or tape it down), and listen. If you hear a whirring fan, it's working — move to #2. Silence or a clicking/buzzing fan = replace the motor. $245–$385 all-in.
2. Frost-blocked evaporator (defrost system failed). Pull the freezer back panel. Heavy frost caked on the coils means the auto-defrost cycle isn't running. Three failure points: defrost heater (open element), defrost thermistor (reads wrong temp), or the main board's defrost timer. $285–$485.
3. Damper stuck closed. The damper is a motorized plastic flap in the duct between freezer and fridge. If it's stuck shut, no cold air gets through. $245–$345 to replace.
4. Dirty condenser coils. On any fridge older than 3 years — especially in homes with pets — coils caked in dust kill efficiency. The compressor runs nonstop but the system can't shed heat fast enough. Vacuum the coils underneath/behind the unit first. Free fix.
5. Door gasket leaking. Hold a dollar bill in the door and close it. If it slides out with no drag, the gasket is shot. $185–$285 to replace.
6. Temperature control or main board. Rare. Verified only after the above are ruled out.
7. Sealed-system / refrigerant leak. Compressor runs but coils stay warm. Repair requires EPA-608 certification; $485–$925 depending on the failure point.
LG refrigerator not cooling
LG French-door (LFXS, LMXS, LRMVS) and side-by-side units have a known linear-compressor failure pattern that throws an Er CO or Er CF code. If your fridge is under 10 years old and the compressor is hot but the coils are warm, you may still be inside LG's extended compressor warranty — call the LG number on the model tag before paying for a sealed-system repair.
Samsung refrigerator not cooling
Samsung French-door RF, RFG, and RS units fail this way most commonly from 22 E / 22E — the ice-room circulation fan iced over. Force defrost (hold Energy Saver + Lighting ~8 seconds, press Energy Saver until "Fd" appears) and find the air leak (ice-room gasket, auger seal). Without sealing the leak, it re-ices in 2–4 weeks.
Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, and Amana
These share the Whirlpool platform. The #1 cause of "warm fridge, cold freezer" on this platform is the evaporator fan motor — Whirlpool's W10188389 / W10812400 series. Second is the bi-metal defrost thermostat. Both are quick, in-truck parts for us.
GE Profile and Café not cooling
GE Profile bottom-freezer and French-door units fail most often from a stuck damper or a control-board defrost timing fault that mimics a damper problem. We test the damper motor directly before quoting board work.
Quick checks before you call
- Vacuum the condenser coils (underneath or behind the fridge)
- Confirm interior vents aren't blocked by food or ice
- Verify the fridge wasn't accidentally set to "showroom" or "demo" mode
- Listen for the evaporator fan with the door switch pressed
- Pull the freezer back panel and look for frost build-up on the coils
Why is my refrigerator not cooling but the freezer is working?
The cooling system is working — the freezer is proof — but cold air isn't reaching the fresh-food compartment. Almost always one of: evaporator fan motor, defrost system (heater/thermistor/board), damper, or condenser coils. Each maps to a specific test we run on-site in 15 minutes.
How long does it take a refrigerator to cool back down?
After the airflow path is restored, a refrigerator takes 4–24 hours to return to target temp depending on how much food is inside and how warm it got. The freezer recovers in 2–6 hours. Don't load groceries back in for at least 4 hours.
Can I fix a refrigerator not cooling myself?
Three DIY fixes are safe: vacuum the condenser coils, replace the door gasket, and clear blocked vents. Anything involving the defrost system, evaporator fan, damper motor, or sealed system requires diagnostic tools and EPA certification for safe repair.
How much does it cost to fix a refrigerator that's not cooling?
Most repairs land $245–$485 all-in including the flat $149 trip fee (credited toward the repair on approval). Sealed-system and compressor work runs $485–$925. Every repair ships with a 1-year written parts-and-labor warranty.
Is it worth repairing a refrigerator that won't cool?
Yes — on a fridge under 10 years old with no other failures, a $300–$500 cooling repair is excellent value vs. a $1,800–$3,500 replacement. We tell you straight on-site if the math tilts toward replacement.
How long should a refrigerator last?
Standard top-freezer and side-by-side units: 14–17 years. French-door units with linear compressors: 10–13 years. Built-in units (Sub-Zero, Monogram, Thermador): 20+ years with periodic sealed-system service.
