This guide answers the most common questions about dishwasher not draining with 2026 Twin Cities pricing, brand-specific fixes, and when to call a factory-trained tech.

Quick answer: Dishwasher won't drain — check in order: (1) garbage disposal knockout plug (every new install — was it removed?), (2) air gap on the counter clogged with grease, (3) drain hose kinked or clogged at the high loop, (4) lower filter clogged with glass/debris, (5) drain pump impeller broken or motor failed. First four are free DIY checks. Drain pump replacement: $245–$385 all-in. Whirlpool F8 E1, Bosch E24, KitchenAid 7-flash all map to the same path.

Step 1 — Disposal knockout plug

If your dishwasher was installed at the same time as a new garbage disposal, the installer may have left the dishwasher knockout plug in place inside the disposal inlet. Result: the dishwasher physically cannot drain. Disconnect the drain hose at the disposal, knock the plug out with a long screwdriver and hammer, fish out the plug, reconnect. This single check is the #1 cause of "dishwasher never drained from day one."

Step 2 — Air gap on counter

If you have a chrome air-gap cap on your countertop, pop the cap and pull the plastic insert. It clogs with grease and food. Rinse, reinstall.

Step 3 — Drain hose high-loop

The drain hose must rise to a high loop under the sink (or to an air gap) before going to the disposal. If it sags low, dirty disposal water siphons back in. Reroute and zip-tie to the underside of the counter at the highest point.

Step 4 — Filter assembly

Twist out the lower filter cup at the bottom of the tub. Rinse glass shards, peach pits, label residue, and grease. Many newer dishwashers have a secondary fine-mesh screen — pull that too. Reinstall snug.

Step 5 — Drain pump

Start a cycle and listen at the bottom-front of the dishwasher. A working drain pump hums for 30–90 seconds. Silence = pump motor failed. Humming with no flow = impeller jammed (often a chicken bone, fruit pit, or piece of glass). $245–$385 installed.

Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag — F8 E1 / 7-flash / clean light flashing

These share the Whirlpool dishwasher chassis. F8 E1, KitchenAid clean light flashing 7 times, and Maytag F8 E1 all map to "drain time fault — couldn't empty within the expected window." The fix path is the disposal knockout / air gap / drain hose / filter / drain pump checklist above, in that order.

Bosch and Thermador — E24 / E25

Bosch and Thermador dishwashers throw E24 (drain pump path) or E25 (drain pump cover loose). E24 = the pump can't move water. Bosch hides the filter under the lower spray arm — easy to miss. The pump cover is a black plastic disc that must click in fully; if it sits loose, E25 fires.

Samsung dishwasher 5C / 5E / OC

Samsung throws 5C / 5E for drain faults and OC for overflow. 5C path is the same checklist. OC means the float sensor in the base tray detected water — there's a leak somewhere upstream (door seal, hose connection, sump gasket).

LG dishwasher OE / IE

LG OE = drain fault. LG drain pumps are the same diagnostic path. LG's filter is unusually deep — many homeowners miss it entirely on the first try.

Why is there water in the bottom of my dishwasher?

An inch or two of standing water in the sump is normal — it keeps the seals from drying out. Multiple inches that cover the heating element is a drain fault: run through the 5-step checklist above. Cloudy or smelly water means it's been there too long and biofilm has set up.

How do I force a dishwasher to drain?

Most models: press Cancel/Drain and close the door — it runs a 90-second drain-only cycle. If that does nothing, hand-bail with a cup, then a sponge, before pulling the filter.

Is it worth repairing a dishwasher that won't drain?

If the failure is the knockout, filter, air gap, or drain hose — yes (often free). If the drain pump has failed, repair is $245–$385 vs. a $500–$1,200 replacement. The tipping point toward replacement is a failed wash motor or main control board on a 10+ year-old unit.

How much does it cost to fix a dishwasher that won't drain?

Most drain-fault repairs land $245–$385 all-in including the flat $149 trip fee (credited toward the repair on approval). Every repair ships with a 1-year written parts-and-labor warranty.

How long should a dishwasher last?

Builder-grade units: 7–10 years. Mid-range (Whirlpool, KitchenAid, GE Profile, Samsung, LG): 10–12 years. Premium (Bosch, Miele, Thermador): 14–18 years with periodic seal and pump service.
