LG Washer Error Codes OE, UE, LE, IE, FE — What They Mean & How We Fix Them

LG front-load and top-load washers (WM, WT, WashTower) share an error-code table. The ones our Twin Cities trucks see most are OE (won't drain), UE (won't spin / unbalance), LE (motor / Hall sensor), IE (won't fill), FE (overfilling), and dE (door won't lock). About 60% of LG washer 'control board' diagnoses are actually a $25–$95 part once we open the unit.

The Minneapolis repair mix

How to enter LG washer diagnostic mode

On most LG front-load washers (WM3500, WM3700, WM3900, WM4000, WM8100, WM9000) and the WashTower, press Power, then hold Spin Speed + Soil Level together for 5 seconds. The display shows software version, then steps through fill, drain, motor, heater, and door-lock tests. On top-load LG (WT-series) the entry is Power, then hold Wash/Rinse + Spin Speed together — older WT5000/WT7100 use a slightly different sequence. The Smart Diagnosis tone (a series of high-pitched beeps) can also be played into the LG ThinQ app or LG's phone support line to decode every stored fault.

Most common LG washer error codes

OE — Drain time exceeded: drain pump motor, lint trap / coin trap clogged (front-load), drain hose kinked or above 8 ft, or impeller seized. Clear the trap before condemning the pump ($245–$345). | UE / uE — Load unbalance: small load shifted to one side (re-distribute) OR worn suspension rods on WM front-loaders (4-rod set, $385–$525). | LE / LE1 — Motor Hall-effect sensor or direct-drive stator: bearings, sensor, or rotor magnet. LE1 on top-loaders is usually the Hall sensor ($285–$425); LE on front-loaders can be the stator harness. | IE — Water inlet: cold/hot supply off, screens at valve clogged, or inlet valve solenoid failed ($245–$345). | FE — Over-fill / pressure sensor: pressure-sensor air dome plugged or sensor failed ($225–$325). | dE / dE1 / dE2 — Door lock: door not fully closed, lock striker bent, or PTC door lock burned out ($245–$345). | tE — Thermistor: temperature sensor open/short ($225–$285). | PE — Pressure sensor / switch fault ($225–$325). | PF — Power failure mid-cycle: not a fault, just resume. | CL — Child lock: hold the indicated buttons for 3 seconds. | E6 — Clutch (top-load): clutch assembly slipping ($325–$485). | SE / 4E (top-load) — Hall sensor: same as LE family. | CE — Current overload: motor or main control. | Sud / SUdS — Excess suds: wrong detergent (non-HE) or overdose — run a rinse + spin and switch to HE. | AE — Leak detected (water in base pan): tub seal, hose, or pump — stop using and call. | LOC / FL — Door not locking flush. | E1 / E2 (commercial coin-op) — coin / vend fault, not service.

What LG washer codes mean before you replace a board

About 60% of LG washer 'main board' diagnoses are actually a $25–$95 part. OE is almost always the pump or a clogged coin trap, not the board. UE on a front-loader is suspension rods, not the board. LE1 on a top-loader is the Hall sensor mounted on the rotor, not the board. The main control board is the right call on CE and on persistent LE codes only after the stator harness, Hall sensor, and rotor have been ruled out. We test the inexpensive parts first.

FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • What does OE mean on an LG washer?

OE means the washer couldn't drain in the allowed time. On LG front-loaders the cause is almost always a clogged coin trap (the small access door at the bottom-right front) — coins, bobby pins, and lint plug the impeller. Open the trap, drain to a shallow pan, and clear the impeller. If OE returns, the drain pump motor or a kinked drain hose is next. Most OE repairs run $245–$345 all-in.

  • What does UE mean on an LG washer?

UE (also shown as uE) is a load-unbalance code — the drum couldn't balance the load during the spin step. Single heavy items (bath mats, comforters) or small loads are common causes; re-distribute and run a Rinse + Spin. If UE keeps returning on normal loads, the suspension rods on a WM front-loader have worn (4-rod kit, $385–$525) or the dampers on a WT top-loader need replacement.

  • What does LE or LE1 mean on an LG washer?

LE / LE1 is the motor Hall-effect sensor or the direct-drive stator. On LG top-loaders (WT-series) LE1 is almost always the Hall sensor mounted on the rotor — a $285–$425 repair. On WM front-loaders LE can be the stator harness or motor windings. We test the rotor magnet and Hall sensor before condemning the main control board.

  • How do I enter LG washer diagnostic mode?

On most LG front-loaders (WM-series) and the WashTower, press Power, then hold Spin Speed + Soil Level for 5 seconds. The display shows software version and steps through fill, drain, motor, heater, and door-lock tests. Top-loaders (WT-series) use Wash/Rinse + Spin Speed. The Smart Diagnosis tone can be played into the LG ThinQ app to decode every stored fault.

  • What does IE mean on an LG washer?

IE is an inlet-fill fault — water didn't reach the target level in the allowed time. Check that both hot and cold supply valves are fully open (a single-supply install will throw IE), clean the small screens at the back of the washer where the hoses connect, and check for kinked hoses. If supply is good, the inlet valve solenoid has failed ($245–$345).

  • What does dE mean on an LG washer?

dE (or dE1 / dE2) means the door didn't lock — the washer won't fill or spin without a confirmed lock. Open and firmly re-close the door; if dE returns, the door lock assembly's PTC has burned out ($245–$345 all-in). On front-loaders, a bent striker on the door is a common companion cause.

  • How much does LG washer repair cost in Minneapolis?

Most LG washer repairs land $245–$465 all-in. Door lock $245–$345. Drain pump $245–$345. Inlet valve $245–$345. Hall sensor $285–$425. Suspension-rod kit (WM front-loaders) $385–$525. Main control board (rare) $385–$525. The flat $149 trip fee is waived when you approve the repair.

  • Why does my LG washer keep showing Sud or SUdS?

Excess detergent or non-HE detergent. LG front-loaders use roughly 1/4 the detergent of a top-loader (about 2 tablespoons of HE liquid for a normal load). Run a Tub Clean cycle empty with no detergent to clear residual suds, switch to HE-rated detergent, and use less than you think. Sud is not a parts fault.
