1. Unbalanced load — the #1 cause across every brand
What it is: Modern washers detect tub imbalance and lock out the high-speed spin to protect the bearings and suspension. One heavy item (a comforter, a bath mat, a pair of soaked jeans), a half-loaded front-loader, or a top-loader with all the weight on one side will trigger it. Symptom: cycle runs full length, drains correctly, but the final spin is slow or skipped entirely. We find this on roughly 3 in 10 'won't spin' calls — and there's no part to replace.
Fix: Open, redistribute the load by hand, run Drain & Spin. If a front-loader still rocks hard during ramp-up, check the shipping bolts (new installs) and shock absorbers (year 7+).
Typical all-in: DIY · $0 if it's load balance
2. Clogged drain pump — the washer can't spin until it drains
What it is: Every modern washer refuses to spin while there's standing water in the tub. A sock, a bra wire, a coin, or hair / lint mat in the pump impeller will stop the drain — and the spin won't start. Symptom: water sits in the drum, the pump hums but doesn't move water, or you hear a buzz then silence. Front-loaders (Samsung WF, LG WM, Whirlpool / Maytag Maxima) ship with a coin-trap filter behind a kick-plate door — clean that first.
Fix: Pull the kick-plate filter, clear debris, test pump impeller for free rotation. If the pump is seized or whining, replace OEM drain pump and verify drain hose isn't kinked or buried.
Typical all-in: $225–$345 all-in
3. Failed door lock (front-load) or lid switch (top-load)
What it is: Front-loaders won't spin until the door lock confirms 'locked' to the main board — even if the door is physically shut. Top-loaders won't spin if the lid switch doesn't see the lid fully closed. Symptom: machine fills and drains fine, no spin, sometimes an LE / dE / Lid error or just silence. Common at year 4–8 on Samsung WF / LG WM front-loaders and on Whirlpool / Maytag VMW top-loaders.
Fix: Test lock / switch continuity in both states, replace OEM assembly. On Samsung WF, also check the door-lock harness pins for arc damage.
Typical all-in: $185–$285 all-in
4. Stretched, shredded, or thrown drive belt
What it is: Belt-drive washers (most front-loaders, plus older Whirlpool / Kenmore top-loaders) use a poly-V belt from the motor to the tub pulley. The belt stretches and slips, or shreds entirely. Symptom: motor spins up loudly but the tub doesn't move, or you smell hot rubber after a cycle. Samsung WF / LG WM / Whirlpool Duet / Maytag Maxima platforms are the most-frequent belt service.
Fix: Tilt the cabinet, inspect belt for cracks / glazing / shred, replace OEM belt and verify tub pulley spins free. If the pulley is wobbly, the rear tub bearing is failing — quote both.
Typical all-in: $225–$325 all-in
5. Failed motor coupler (direct-drive top-loaders)
What it is: Whirlpool / Kenmore / Maytag direct-drive top-loaders (the older 'agitator' platform, model numbers starting WTW / MVW) use a small plastic-and-rubber coupler between the motor and the transmission. It's the designed sacrificial part — overloading or unbalanced spins shred it. Symptom: motor runs, you hear the hum, but the agitator and tub don't move.
Fix: Replace OEM motor coupler (3-piece kit — both plastic ends + rubber insert). Inspect motor shaft and trans input for wear. 30-minute job on a known platform.
Typical all-in: $245–$365 all-in
6. Worn clutch or shift actuator (Whirlpool VMW / Maytag Bravos)
What it is: Whirlpool VMW and Maytag Bravos top-loaders (2012+) use a shift actuator that engages the spin clutch. Symptom: machine clicks 4–6 times at the start of the cycle, displays UL, F7-E1, F7-E5, or just won't spin. Most-frequent failure on Bravos XL platforms past year 5.
Fix: Test actuator with multimeter or replace by symptom — it's a $60 OEM part. Verify rotor / stator gap and inspect splutch / clutch dogs while in.
Typical all-in: $245–$365 all-in
7. Worn carbon motor brushes (front-load, Samsung / LG / Bosch)
What it is: Older Samsung WF / LG WM front-loaders with universal motors (not direct-drive) use carbon brushes that wear out at year 7–10. Symptom: motor sparks audibly, spin is weak, sometimes throws a motor-circuit fault. Direct-drive LG (the rear-mount stator units) and Samsung VRT / WF85 don't have brushes — different diagnosis.
Fix: Confirm motor type (badge / model), replace OEM brush set, inspect commutator for grooving. If commutator is cut, the motor's done.
Typical all-in: $265–$385 all-in
8. Failed main control board (rare — last suspect)
What it is: If load is balanced, drain runs clean, door locks, belt and coupler are good, the main control board has failed to send the spin-call signal. We find this on under 5% of 'won't spin' calls — usually after a power surge or on Samsung WF / LG WM units past year 7 with moisture-corroded board pins.
Fix: Verify spin-call voltage at the motor / lock harness in service mode, replace OEM control board if no signal. Samsung WF / LG WM / Whirlpool main boards are stocked.
Typical all-in: $385–$525 all-in
