Lint accumulates in the duct run, airflow drops, the unit cycles on the high-limit thermostat, and you end up running it twice. The fix isn't always a new heating element. It's a real airflow diagnostic, a vent cleaning if the duct is restricted, and a thermostat or thermal-fuse replacement if the high-limit has tripped permanently.

The short list of dryer failures: heating element (electric), igniter / flame sensor / gas valve coils (gas), drum rollers, idler pulley, drive belt, blower wheel, thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat, door switch, and the occasional control board.
