GE Refrigerator Error Codes t-Codes, dE, FF, rF, Sb — What They Mean & How We Fix Them

GE Profile, GE Cafe, GE Monogram, and Haier-platform GE refrigerators share most fault codes — the t-code family (t1, t2 sensors), dE (defrost), FF / rF (evap fans), and Sb (sabbath mode, often confused for a fault). Most GE fridge 'errors' are sabbath mode or a coil clean away from clearing.

What we fix in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis repair mix

How to enter GE refrigerator diagnostic mode

On most GE Profile and Cafe French-door (PFE, GFE, CFE) and side-by-side (GSS, PSS) refrigerators, hold the K + ° (or the two unlabeled buttons under the temperature display) for 3 seconds — the panel switches to service mode and rotates through compressor RPM, evap and condenser fan RPM, defrost-heater state, and each thermistor temperature. On Monogram built-ins (ZIS, ZIP, ZIC), the entry is on the recessed control header — hold Lower Set + Light for 3 seconds. The on-screen test cycle ('IM Test', 'Defrost Test') runs each subsystem and stores codes.

Most common GE refrigerator error codes

Sb / SAb — Sabbath mode (display dims, compressor only runs to setpoint, ice/lights disabled): hold Light + Door Alarm for 3 seconds to exit. Free fix when this is the cause. | t1 / t2 / tE — Thermistor pair fault: fridge or freezer sensor open or shorted. Cheap sensor swap ($225–$285). | dE — Defrost-system fault: defrost heater open or defrost sensor (bimetal) failed, coil ices solid ($325–$485). | FF — Freezer evaporator fan: motor seized or iced ($285–$425). | rF — Fresh-food evap fan (French-door units): motor seized or iced ($285–$425). | CF — Condenser fan (under the unit) seized or restricted by dust ($245–$345 plus coil clean). | Pf — Power failure: not a fault, just dismiss with any button. | 88 — Ice maker timer in test/home position — usually clears with a manual cycle. | EE — Ice-maker test cycle still in progress. | CC — Communication error (main board ↔ dispenser ribbon cable, often the through-door cable on French-door units). ($285–$425). | E0 / E1 / E2 (older Monogram) — Sensor pair faults. | OF — Showroom mode on Haier-platform GE (mostly Haier-branded units). | IM (flashing) — Ice maker fault; pull the in-door tray and inspect for ice jam. | Dr / Ic — Dispenser-side fault. | dF (on-screen) — Defrost in progress; not a fault.

Sabbath mode is the #1 GE Profile 'error' call

GE built sabbath mode into nearly every Profile / Cafe / Monogram fridge sold after 2014 — it dims the panel, disables ice and door alarms, and only runs the compressor to setpoint. Homeowners trip it accidentally (it's a 3-second hold of two adjacent buttons) and read the symptom as 'the fridge stopped working.' On about 1 in 8 GE Profile / Cafe 'error' calls, the entire fix is exiting sabbath mode. Hold Light + Door Alarm for 3 seconds. Free fix — call us first.

GE refrigerator repair in the Twin Cities

We stock GE thermistors, evap and condenser fan motors, defrost heaters and bimetal sensors, ice-maker assemblies (built-in and in-door), through-door dispenser ribbon cables (the CC fix on French-door units), inverter boards, and the common Profile / Cafe / Monogram main control boards on the truck. Monogram built-in parts are special-order on some sealed-system components. About 80% of GE Profile fridge repairs finish first visit. Flat $149 trip fee, waived on approval. 1-year written warranty.

FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • What does Sb mean on a GE refrigerator?

Sb (or SAb) is Sabbath mode — the panel dims, ice and door alarms turn off, and the compressor only runs to setpoint with no display updates. It's not a fault. Hold Light + Door Alarm for 3 seconds to exit. About 1 in 8 GE Profile 'error' calls is this free fix.

  • What does dE mean on a GE refrigerator?

dE is a defrost-system fault — defrost heater open, defrost bimetal sensor failed, or main control not firing the defrost cycle. The evaporator coil ices solid, airflow stops, and the fridge climbs to 50°F+ while the freezer stays cold. Repair runs $325–$485 all-in.

  • What does FF or rF mean on a GE refrigerator?

FF is the freezer-section evaporator fan; rF is the fresh-food evaporator fan (French-door dual-evap units). Both mean airflow stopped — seized motor or iced fan shroud downstream of a defrost failure. Repair $285–$425. If a defrost failure caused the icing, the heater or sensor is replaced in the same visit.

  • How do I enter GE refrigerator diagnostic mode?

On GE Profile and Cafe (PFE, GFE, CFE, GSS, PSS), hold the two unlabeled buttons (sometimes K + °) under the temperature display for 3 seconds. The panel enters service mode and cycles through compressor RPM, fan RPM, defrost state, and each thermistor temperature. Monogram built-ins use Lower Set + Light.

  • What does CC mean on a GE refrigerator?

CC is a communication fault between the main control board and the dispenser display — almost always the through-door ribbon cable on French-door units, which fatigues at the door hinge after year 5–7. Cable replacement runs $285–$425. We replace the cable before swapping boards.

  • How much does GE refrigerator repair cost?

Most GE Profile / Cafe fridge repairs land $285–$585 all-in. Sensor swaps $225–$285. Fan motors $285–$425. Defrost system $325–$485. Through-door dispenser cable $285–$425. Main control board $385–$585. Monogram sealed-system parts run higher. The $149 trip fee is waived when you approve the repair.

  • Is a GE Profile refrigerator worth fixing?

Almost always yes below year 12 — replacement runs $1,800–$4,500+ for Profile / Cafe French-door units. Monogram built-ins are worth repairing past year 20 — replacement is $9,000–$18,000+. The exception is a sealed-system leak on a basic GE side-by-side past year 12; at that point the math is closer to a replacement.
