GE Dishwasher Error Codes H2O, C1, FILL, Blinking Lights — What They Mean & How We Fix Them

GE Profile, GE Cafe, GE Adora, and Monogram dishwashers share most fault codes. Many GE dishwashers don't display alphanumeric codes — instead they blink the start light a specific number of times. We translate the blink-count tables below.

What we fix in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis repair mix

How to enter GE dishwasher diagnostic mode

On most GE Profile and Cafe dishwashers (GDT, PDT, CDT, DDT), enter diagnostics by pressing Heated Dry, Normal, Heated Dry, Normal within 5 seconds (button labels vary slightly — the pattern is two specific buttons alternating four times). The dishwasher cycles through inlet valve, drain pump, heater, diverter, dispenser, and door switch, then flashes any stored fault code as a blink-count on the Start light. To clear stored faults, press Start once after the read-out. On Monogram (ZDT), the entry is on the recessed control header.

Most common GE dishwasher error codes

H2O / FILL — Inlet valve: supply off, valve clogged, or solenoid failed ($245–$345). | C1 / C2 — Control-board communication: console ↔ main board ribbon, often in the door hinge ($285–$425). | Sd — Suds: wrong detergent (hand soap) or overdose; run a rinse-only cycle, no parts fault. | LK — Leak detected (float in base pan tripped): pump seal, tub gasket, or hose leak; STOP and call. | dr — Drain time exceeded: drain pump or clogged filter (lift filter assembly from sump and clear) ($245–$365). | CL — Control lock: hold Heated Dry for 3 seconds to release. | 88 — Power-up state — usually clears with a normal cycle. | Blink count 8 — Heater fault: heating element open or relay ($285–$425). | Blink count 9 — Vent assembly fault (the door-vent flapper motor for drying). | Blink count 11 — Diverter motor stuck. | Blink count 12 — Turbidity sensor (optical) clouded — clean the sensor on the sump bottom; $95 part if it persists. | Blink count 13 — Inlet fill thermistor. | Blink count 14 — Wash motor (BLDC motor on newer Profile units). | Door switch fault (DS) — door not registering closed. | tE — Temperature sensor.

Almost every dr / drain code is a clogged filter — try it first

Lift the upper rack out, twist and pull the filter assembly out of the sump. Rinse under hot water until it's clear. Re-seat the filter. This is the entire fix on about 50% of dr calls. If dr returns after a filter clean, the drain pump impeller is jammed (often glass shard from a broken dish) or the pump motor has failed — that's where we come in.

GE dishwasher repair in the Twin Cities

We stock GE inlet valves, drain pumps, heating elements, diverter motors, turbidity sensors, door-hinge cables (the C1 fix), wash-motor assemblies, and the common Profile / Cafe / Adora main control boards on the truck. FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • What does H2O mean on a GE dishwasher?

H2O (sometimes shown as FILL) means the dishwasher couldn't fill in the allowed time. Confirm the supply shutoff under the sink is open, the inlet valve at the back-bottom isn't clogged, and the float in the tub bottom moves freely. If supply is good, the inlet valve solenoid has failed — $245–$345.

  • What does C1 or C2 mean on a GE dishwasher?

C1 / C2 is a communication fault between the door console and the main board in the toe-kick — usually the flat ribbon cable that runs through the door hinge has fatigued. Repair $285–$425. We replace the cable before swapping boards.

  • How do I read GE dishwasher blink codes?

On GE Profile / Cafe / Adora dishwashers without an alphanumeric display, fault codes show as a blink-count on the Start light. Count the blinks, pause, count the next set. 8 blinks = heater, 9 = vent, 11 = diverter, 12 = turbidity sensor, 13 = inlet thermistor, 14 = wash motor.

  • How do I enter GE dishwasher diagnostic mode?

Press Heated Dry, Normal, Heated Dry, Normal within 5 seconds (the two specific buttons vary by model; the pattern is two adjacent buttons alternating four times). The dishwasher cycles through inlet, drain, heater, diverter, and dispenser, then flashes stored codes.

  • What does dr mean on a GE dishwasher?

dr is drain time exceeded. First check: lift the filter assembly from the bottom of the sump and rinse it clean — this fixes ~50% of dr calls. If dr returns, the drain pump is jammed (often a glass shard) or the pump motor has failed. Repair $245–$365.

  • How much does GE dishwasher repair cost?

Most GE dishwasher repairs land $215–$465 all-in. Inlet valve $245–$345. Drain pump $245–$365. Heater $285–$425. Door-hinge cable (C1) $285–$425. Turbidity sensor $215–$285. Main control board (rare) $325–$465. The $149 trip fee is waived when you approve the repair.

  • Why does my GE dishwasher just beep with all lights flashing?

That's GE's 'stored fault detected' state — count the Start-light blink pattern (e.g. 8 blinks · pause · 8 blinks = code 8, heater fault). Press Start once to clear after reading. If the same pattern returns next cycle, the underlying part has failed.
