Bosch Dishwasher Error Codes E15, E09, E22, E24, E25 — What They Mean & How We Fix Them

Bosch dishwashers (300, 500, 800, Benchmark, Ascenta) use a totally different platform from US-brand dishwashers — closed-loop water sensing, aqua-stop leak protection, condensation drying (no heated element on 500+), and silent BLDC pump motors. The codes our trucks see most are E15 (water in the base pan — almost always tripped aqua-stop, not a real leak), E22 / E24 (drain), and E09 (heater).

What we fix in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis repair mix

How to enter Bosch dishwasher diagnostic mode

Most Bosch dishwashers (SHX, SHE, SHV, SGE, SGS, SGV, SMV) enter customer-service test mode by closing the door, then holding the Power button while pressing Start within 3 seconds — release. The unit cycles through fill, drain, heater, diverter, and dispenser (~12 minutes). Stored fault codes display in the time window. Older integrated handle units (no display) show stored codes as the blinking pattern of the Clean indicator LED — count the blinks (e.g. 5 blinks = E05). Bosch tech mode requires a service-tool plug; the customer test above is the most actionable level.

Most common Bosch dishwasher error codes

E15 — Water in the base pan tripped the aqua-stop float. In Minneapolis homes 8 out of 10 E15 calls are condensation pooling in the base from cold concrete floors, NOT a real leak. Tip the dishwasher forward 45° (towel under feet) to drain the base pan, then let it sit upright 30 minutes. If E15 returns immediately, there's a real internal leak (door gasket, sump seal, heat-exchanger). | E22 — Sump filter is clogged: pull the filter assembly from the bottom of the tub, rinse under hot water, re-seat. Free fix on 90% of E22 calls. | E24 — Drain hose blocked, kinked, or above 96 in / drain too high. Check hose routing. | E25 — Drain pump motor blocked or failed (impeller jam) ($245–$365). | E01 / E02 — Main control board fault ($385–$525). | E04 — Flow meter (turbine) failure — turbine in the inlet manifold ($285–$385). | E05 — Overfill (float sensor) — usually a pressure-sensor calibration. | E06 — Door switch or door not closing flush. | E07 — Drying-system fan (condensation drying) — 500 / 800 / Benchmark. | E09 — Continuous-flow heater (Flow-Through Heater) open. The 'heater' is integrated with the wash pump on Bosch — expensive part ($425–$685). | E12 — Hard water deposits on heater (run a Bosch descaler). | E14 — Reed switch on flow meter. | E16 — Inlet valve stuck open (continuous fill). | E17 — Reed switch / inlet permanently signaling water present. | E18 — Inlet valve fault. | E27 — Low-voltage. | F01 — Foam / suds detected. | NA - Detergent / rinse aid empty.

E15 is condensation 80% of the time — try this first

Bosch's aqua-stop is a floating Styrofoam ring in the base pan. Any moisture lifts the float and shuts off the water inlet (the dishwasher won't fill on the next cycle). In Minnesota homes the base pan picks up condensation from cold concrete or tile floors — this trips E15 with zero actual leak. The fix is 2 steps: (1) tip the dishwasher forward 45° with a towel under the front feet and let the base pan drain, (2) leave the unit upright with door cracked open for 30 minutes. If E15 returns immediately, the door gasket or sump seal has a real leak — that's where we come in. Don't pay for parts until you've done the tilt test.

FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • What does E15 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?

E15 means water has tripped the aqua-stop float in the base pan. In Minneapolis homes 8 out of 10 E15 calls are condensation, NOT a real leak. Tip the dishwasher forward 45° to drain the base pan and let it sit upright 30 minutes. If E15 returns immediately, the door gasket or sump seal is leaking and we need to come out.

  • What does E22 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?

E22 means the sump filter is clogged. Pull the filter assembly from the bottom of the tub (twist counter-clockwise to release), rinse under hot water, re-seat. This is the entire fix on 90% of E22 calls. Free.

  • What does E24 or E25 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?

E24 is a blocked or kinked drain hose (or a drain run higher than 96 inches above the floor); E25 is a failed or jammed drain pump motor. Check the drain hose first; if it's clear, the pump is jammed (often a fruit pit or glass shard). Repair $245–$365.

  • What does E09 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?

E09 is the continuous-flow heater (Bosch calls it the Flow-Through Heater) — Bosch integrates the heater into the wash-pump assembly, so the part is more expensive than a standard heating element. Repair $425–$685 all-in. The dishwasher still washes cold without the heater, but rinse-aid drying drops off.

  • How do I enter Bosch dishwasher diagnostic mode?

Close the door, then hold Power while pressing Start within 3 seconds — release. The dishwasher cycles through fill, drain, heater, diverter, and dispenser (~12 min) and stores any codes. Older integrated-handle Bosch models flash stored codes as the Clean LED blink count.

  • How much does Bosch dishwasher repair cost?

Most Bosch dishwasher repairs land $245–$525 all-in. Filter rinse (E22) free. Drain pump $245–$365. Door gasket $245–$345. Flow meter $285–$385. Flow-Through Heater $425–$685. Main control board $385–$525. The $149 trip fee is waived when you approve the repair.

  • Why do Bosch dishwashers throw E15 so often in Minnesota?

Cold basement / kitchen floors cause condensation to pool in the base pan even when the dishwasher itself isn't leaking. Bosch's aqua-stop is over-sensitive to this. The tilt-and-dry routine clears most E15 events; if it returns, there's a real internal leak.
