KitchenAid Dishwasher Error Codes F8 E4, F9 E1, F2 E2, F6 E3 — What They Mean & How We Fix Them

KitchenAid dishwashers (KDTM, KDTE, KDFM, KDFE, KDPM, KDPE, KDHE) run on the same Whirlpool control platform as Whirlpool and Maytag dishwashers — fault codes, diagnostic-mode entry, and many internal parts are cross-compatible. The ones our Twin Cities trucks see most are F8 E4 (OWI optical water-clarity sensor), F9 E1 (drain), F2 E2 (stuck-key touch console), and F6 E3 (hinge ribbon cable).

What we fix in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis repair mix

How to enter KitchenAid dishwasher diagnostic mode

KitchenAid uses the same diagnostic entry as Whirlpool / Maytag: within 5 seconds of closing the door, press any three buttons (not Start or Cancel) in the pattern 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3. Close the door within 4 seconds of the third press. The dishwasher runs a 12-minute self-test through inlet, drain, heater, diverter, OWI sensor, and dispenser, and stores fault codes. Repeat the 1-2-3 sequence to read stored codes — digital models display as F-E pairs; hidden-control models flash paired blinks on the Clean light (e.g. 8 blinks · pause · 4 blinks = F8 E4).

Most common KitchenAid dishwasher error codes

F8 E4 — OWI (Optical Water Indicator) sensor: clouded sensor lens (calcium film from Minneapolis hard water) reads dirty water that isn't there. Vinegar-soak the OWI lens on the sump bottom first; if it returns, OEM OWI assembly ($95 part, $215–$285 all-in). | F9 E1 — Drain time exceeded: chopper-blade jam in drain pump (glass shard, peach pit, twist tie), failed pump motor, or kinked drain hose ($245–$365). | F2 E2 — Stuck key on touch console: water intrusion behind the membrane ($285–$425). | F2 E1 — User-interface ↔ main control comm: ribbon cable or console board. | F6 E3 — Console ↔ main board communication: door-hinge ribbon cable ($285–$425). | F8 E1 — Long fill: inlet valve, water supply, or pressure-sensor air hose ($245–$345). | F3 E1 — Heater fault: heating element open or relay ($245–$345). | F7 E1 — Flow meter (turbidity / water tracker). | F4 E4 — Diverter motor stuck in the sump ($285–$385). | F5 E1 — Door switch not registering closed. | F8 E3 — Excess suds: wrong detergent. | F6 E1 — No water detected: supply or float. | CL — Control lock (hold Heated Dry for 3 sec). | F2 E3 — Stuck relay on main control.

F8 E4 is hard-water film on the OWI lens 50% of the time

The OWI sensor on the bottom of the KitchenAid sump is a small clear plastic lens that reads water clarity (dirty water = run a longer wash). Minneapolis is a hard-water market — calcium film coats the lens and the dishwasher reads dirty water all the time, which throws F8 E4 mid-cycle. Soak the lens with a paper towel + white vinegar for 5 minutes, wipe clear, re-run. About half of F8 E4 calls clear without parts. If it returns, OWI replacement is a $95 part and a 25-minute job.

KitchenAid dishwasher repair in the Twin Cities

We stock KitchenAid OWI sensors, drain pumps (with chopper assemblies), inlet valves, door-latch switches, heating elements, diverter motors, door-hinge ribbon cables, and the common KDTM / KDTE / KDFM main control boards on the truck. KitchenAid, Whirlpool, and Maytag dishwasher parts are largely cross-compatible. About 82% of KitchenAid dishwasher repairs finish first visit. Flat $149 trip fee, waived on approval. 1-year written warranty.

FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • What does F8 E4 mean on a KitchenAid dishwasher?

F8 E4 is the optical water indicator (OWI) sensor. Hard-water film on the lens (the OWI lives on the bottom of the sump) makes the dishwasher read dirty water. Soak the lens with a vinegar-dampened paper towel for 5 minutes and wipe clear — fixes about half of F8 E4 calls. If it returns, OWI replacement is $215–$285.

  • What does F9 E1 mean on a KitchenAid dishwasher?

F9 E1 is drain time exceeded. The drain pump's chopper blade is jammed (glass shard, peach pit, twist tie) about 70% of the time, the pump motor itself has failed about 25%, and a kinked drain hose is the rest. Pull the pump cover and clear the chopper before condemning parts.

  • What does F6 E3 mean on a KitchenAid dishwasher?

F6 E3 is a communication fault between the door console and the main board in the toe-kick — almost always the flat ribbon cable that runs through the door hinge, which fatigues at year 5–7. Cable replacement runs $285–$425.

  • How do I enter KitchenAid dishwasher diagnostic mode?

Same as Whirlpool / Maytag: within 5 seconds of closing the door, press any 3 non-Start buttons in the pattern 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3. Close the door within 4 seconds of the third press. The dishwasher runs a 12-minute self-test and stores codes.

  • Are KitchenAid and Whirlpool dishwasher codes the same?

Yes. KitchenAid (KDTM, KDTE, KDFM, KDFE), Whirlpool (WDT, WDF), and Maytag (MDB) dishwashers run on the same control platform. F8 E4, F9 E1, F2 E2, F6 E3 mean the same thing across all three brands, and many internal parts (pump, OWI, diverter, heater) are cross-compatible.

  • How much does KitchenAid dishwasher repair cost?

Most KitchenAid dishwasher repairs land $215–$485 all-in. OWI sensor $215–$285. Drain pump $245–$365. Touchpad / console $285–$425. Heater $245–$345. Door-hinge cable (F6 E3) $285–$425. Diverter motor $285–$385. Main control board (rare) $325–$465. The $149 trip fee is waived when you approve the repair.

  • Is a KitchenAid dishwasher worth repairing?

Almost always yes — KitchenAid dishwashers retail $899–$2,099+ installed, and most repairs are under $485. The exception is a main control board failure on a unit past year 12; at that point the math is closer to replacement.
