GE Refrigerator Not Cooling Profile, Cafe, Monogram — What's Wrong & What It Costs

GE refrigerators (GFE / GNE side-by-side, PFE / PFSS / PYE french-door, Cafe CFE, Monogram ZIS / ZIC built-ins) use a different architecture than Whirlpool — most newer GE units run a dual-evaporator system with separate fans, and the variable-speed inverter compressor board has its own failure mode. Diagnostics start with confirming whether your unit is single-evap or dual-evap before any parts are quoted. Below is the test order we run on every GE no-cooling call in the Twin Cities.

What we fix in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis repair mix

Try Turbo Cool first

Press the Turbo Cool (older models) or Quick Chill (Cafe / Monogram) button. This forces the compressor and both fans to maximum for ~8 hours and clears soft control faults. About 1 in 10 GE no-cooling calls is solved by this — try before scheduling.

Single-evap vs dual-evap — know your model

GFE / GNE side-by-side models are single-evap (one evaporator and fan in the freezer feeding both compartments). PFE / PFSS / PYE french-door and Cafe / Monogram built-ins are dual-evap (separate evap and fan in each section). A dual-evap unit with fridge warm + freezer cold is almost always the fridge-side evap fan or fridge-side defrost — not airflow. Wrong diagnostic on the wrong chassis wastes a service call.

Inverter board on the compressor

GE's variable-speed compressors use an inverter board mounted directly on the compressor. When the inverter fails, the compressor never starts — both compartments warm slowly over 24 hours. We diagnose by listening for the compressor (silent) and testing the inverter with a meter. OEM inverter $285–$425 installed. This is the #1 GE-specific failure on units 4–7 years old.

Evap fan motor (single or dual)

Evap fan failures on GE are usually bearing seize or the small DC motor itself losing torque. We hear nothing when the door is closed but the lights go off (door switch defeats lighting). Replacement $245–$345 OEM per fan.

Defrost system — both warm, freezer thawing

GE uses an adaptive defrost board (or main control on newer Cafe / Monogram). Failed defrost heater, thermistor, or board leaves the evap iced over — eventually no airflow, both compartments warm. We test heater continuity (~25 ohms) and thermistor resistance (~6.5k ohms at room temp). Defrost repair $285–$425.

Mullion damper (french-door)

On PFE / PYE / Cafe french-door models, the motorized damper between freezer and fridge can stick closed. Result: freezer is cold, fridge climbs. The damper draws cold air from the freezer evap into the fridge section on demand. Replacement $245–$345 — a 45-minute job on most french-door GE models.

Monogram built-in — separate failure profile

ZIS / ZIC / ZISS built-ins use a different sealed system and are commonly factory-warrantied for 2 years parts. We're authorized to file Monogram warranty claims. Common Monogram failure: condenser fan on top of the unit (it's accessed through the kickplate) seizes from cabinet dust. $245–$345.

FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • Why is my GE Profile refrigerator not cooling?

On a 4–7 year-old GE Profile, the #1 cause is the inverter board on the compressor. Compressor stays silent, both compartments warm slowly. Older units skew toward defrost-heater or evap-fan failures.

  • How do I reset a GE refrigerator?

Unplug for 5 minutes, plug back in. For Cafe / Monogram with the touch display, hold Lock + Filter Reset for 3 seconds. Press Turbo Cool / Quick Chill after restart to force a full-speed pull-down.

  • What temperature should a GE refrigerator be?

Fridge 37°F, freezer 0°F. GE's control labels these as the factory default — adjust only if you have a thermometer confirming the actual cabinet temp is off.

  • Why is my GE freezer cold but the refrigerator warm?

On single-evap models: stuck damper or icy evap fan. On dual-evap french-door: failed fridge-side evap fan or fridge-side defrost — completely different parts than the freezer side.

  • How much to fix a GE refrigerator not cooling?

Most GE refrigerator repairs in the Twin Cities land $285–$425 all-in — parts, labor, and the $149 trip fee (which is credited toward the repair when you approve the work). Sealed-system or compressor work runs higher and we always quote that up front. Every job ships with a 1-year written parts-and-labor warranty.

  • Is it worth fixing a GE Profile refrigerator?

Inverter board failures ($285–$425) at 5–7 years old are a clear yes — comparable Profile french-door $2,100–$2,800 new. We'll quote both numbers on site.
