Losing a freezer means losing hundreds of dollars of meat, breast milk, garden harvest, or hunting season payoff. We treat freezer calls with the same urgency as a dead fridge — book before 2pm on a weekday and you get a same-day window from one of our sealed-system techs. Most repairs are done in the same visit because every truck rolls with the most-failed parts for Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE, Samsung, LG, and the built-in columns from Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Thermador.
We service every neighborhood from Downtown Minneapolis condos to lake-house chest freezers in the Brainerd Lakes. Our diagnostic is a structured walk through the sealed system, defrost cycle, thermostat, and door seals — not a guess.
What we actually fix on a freezer call
Most freezer failures land on a short list: a stuck defrost system causing frost burial, a failed start relay or inverter on the compressor, a leaking door gasket bleeding warm air, or a thermostat that's lost calibration. Less common but real: sealed-system leaks (recovery + recharge work that requires EPA Section 608 certification — we have it), evaporator fan failures, and main control boards on smart units.
If you've already noticed slabs of ice forming at the bottom of the freezer, the defrost drain is almost certainly clogged — we wrote a full walkthrough on that in our blog post on stubborn freezer ice. Same goes for the loud sounds: rattles and hums almost always trace back to the evaporator fan, condenser fan, or compressor mounts. Our deep dive on freezer noise diagnosis covers exactly what each sound means.
Built-in freezer columns and Sub-Zero work
Built-in freezer columns are their own discipline. Sub-Zero IT-30FI, IT-36FI, and the older 700 series sit in custom cabinetry with the condenser at the top, and a sealed-system fault often means a full evac-and-recharge that takes specialty tools and a recovery machine. We service every Sub-Zero generation, plus Thermador Freedom collection freezer columns and Wolf-paired installations across Edina, Wayzata, North Oaks, Lake Minnetonka, and the western suburbs. Call ahead so we can confirm the right tech and the right tooling roll to your address.
Honest pricing, written warranty
Flat $149 diagnostic, fully waived the moment you approve the repair. Most freezer repairs land between $220 and $560 all-in. Sealed-system work runs higher — we'll always quote that in writing before we open a line. Every repair includes a 1-year parts-and-labor warranty in writing.
Maintenance that actually keeps a freezer alive
Vacuum the condenser coils twice a year — they're either behind the kick plate or up top behind the grille on built-ins. A coated coil makes the compressor work twice as hard and shortens its life by years. Wipe the door gasket with warm soapy water once a month and check the seal with a dollar bill: if it slides out without resistance, the gasket is leaking warm air. Don't overload the freezer past the fill line — air has to circulate around the evaporator vents. For garage-rated freezers, confirm yours is actually rated for cold-garage use; sub-40°F ambient temps will fool the thermostat on a non-rated unit and cause it to stop cycling.

FAQ
Freezer Repair — common questions
My chest freezer stopped freezing — is it worth fixing?+
Under 10 years old: almost always yes. Common causes are a failed start relay ($180–$260 all-in) or a stuck thermostat ($210–$310). Over 12 years with a sealed-system leak, we'll usually recommend replacement and tell you straight in writing.
Do you repair Sub-Zero freezer columns?+
Yes — every generation, including IT-30FI and IT-36FI. We have factory-trained Sub-Zero techs and EPA-certified sealed-system specialists on staff.
How fast can you reach my address for a freezer call?+
Most calls placed before 2pm on a weekday get a same-day window across the Twin Cities, Central MN, and Western Wisconsin. Freezer calls are priority because every hour of warm freezer is lost food.
My freezer keeps frosting over inside — why?+
Almost always a defrost-system fault: a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or main control board that's not initiating the cycle. We diagnose the actual chain on the first visit.
Will my homeowner's insurance cover spoiled food?+
Many policies do — usually $500 to $1,500 in food spoilage coverage if the failure is sudden and accidental. We provide a written diagnosis and invoice that documents the failure date, which is what most adjusters need.
