What actually fails on a microwave

About forty percent of our microwave calls trace back to door-switch failures (the unit thinks the door is open and refuses to fire). Twenty-five percent are magnetron failures — when the unit runs and the turntable spins but nothing heats, the magnetron is the prime suspect. The rest split between high-voltage diodes, capacitors, control boards, turntable motors, and vent-fan motors on OTR units.

A note on safety: microwave capacitors hold a lethal charge for hours after the unit is unplugged. This is genuinely not a DIY job past the door-switch level. We have the gear and the training to discharge and test safely.

Built-in trim kits, Sharp drawers, and Wolf speed ovens

Built-in microwaves with trim kits and Sharp KB-6524 / KB-6525 drawer units are worth fixing — they're expensive to replace and the trim-kit fitment is rarely interchangeable across brands. Wolf and Miele speed ovens (built-in combination convection microwaves) are even more so; replacement runs $4,000+. We have factory-trained techs for all of these and can usually source parts within 2–3 business days.

Flat $129 diagnostic, waived when you approve the repair. Most countertop microwave repairs aren't worth doing — we'll tell you straight. Over-the-range and built-in microwave repairs typically land between $180 and $380 all-in. Wolf and Miele speed-oven repairs run higher and are quoted in writing. Every completed repair carries a 1-year parts-and-labor warranty.

When a microwave is worth fixing (and when it isn't)

Countertop microwaves under $250 new: not worth fixing past a $0 door-switch swap. Replace and move on. Over-the-range microwaves with a working vent hood: usually worth fixing because the install labor on a replacement (often $200+) wipes out the savings. Built-in trim-kit microwaves: almost always worth fixing — replacement requires a unit that fits the existing trim-kit cutout, which limits brand options. Sharp microwave drawers and Wolf/Miele speed ovens: always worth fixing for anything short of a complete cavity failure.
