Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes? Here's Why

If your dishwasher runs a full cycle but the dishes come out dirty, filmy, or gritty, the machine isn't broken — it's underperforming. Modern dishwashers depend heavily on water temperature, filter cleanliness, spray arm flow, and detergent quality. Fix those four and 90% of 'won't clean' calls go away.

Skip the guesswork — book a dishwasher repair pro

Most dishwasher symptoms get diagnosed and fixed on the first visit. Flat $129 diagnostic — fully waived when you approve the repair.

Most likely causes

  1. 1.Filter clogged with food debris (cleaning every 1–2 weeks is required on modern machines)
  2. 2.Spray arm holes plugged with hard-water scale or food
  3. 3.Inlet water temperature too low (must be 120°F minimum at the dishwasher)
  4. 4.Old or wrong detergent (powder loses potency, gel underperforms)
  5. 5.Rinse aid empty — causes water spots and slow drying
  6. 6.Hard water scale buildup throughout the wash system

What you'll need

  • Soft brush
  • Toothpick or paperclip
  • Vinegar (1 cup)
  • Dishwasher cleaner tablet (Affresh, Finish)

Step-by-step

How to fix it

  1. 1

    Pull and clean the filter

Remove the bottom rack. Twist the filter assembly counterclockwise and lift out. Rinse under hot water with a soft brush until no debris remains. Modern filters need this every 1–2 weeks — older 'self-cleaning' filters with a hard food disposer don't.

  2. 2

    Clean the spray arms

Lift each spray arm off (usually pulls off or unscrews). Hold each one up to the light — the small holes should all be clear. Use a toothpick to clear any plugged holes. Soak in vinegar for 30 minutes if scaled.

  3. 3

Run the kitchen sink hot before starting

Run the kitchen tap on hot until it's HOT. This pulls the cooled water out of the line so the dishwasher fills with 120°F+ water on the first fill — a critical 30 seconds that determines wash quality.

  4. 4

Use fresh detergent and the right amount

Dishwasher detergent loses potency after 6 months. Use the recommended amount in BOTH the pre-wash cup (small) and the main cup (large) for normal loads. Pods are the most consistent.

  5. 5

    Refill the rinse aid

Open the rinse aid reservoir (next to the detergent cup) and fill to the line. Set the dispenser to 4 of 5. Without rinse aid, water beads on dishes instead of sheeting off — that's where film and spots come from.

  6. 6

    Run a cleaning cycle

Empty dishwasher. Place a cup of white vinegar upright on the top rack and run a hot cycle. OR drop a dishwasher cleaning tablet (Affresh) in the bottom and run hot. Do this monthly to keep scale at bay.

Stop and call

When to put the screwdriver down

Safety + model triggers

  • Electrical

Strong burning smell during the wash cycle.

Heating element shorted to the tub — risk of electrified water and a cabinet fire.

  • Water leak

Water leaking from under the dishwasher during the cycle while you're testing.

Pump or sump leak — separate problem from cleaning, and a fast flood risk.

  • Built-in / premium

Bosch 800/Benchmark, Miele, KitchenAid built-in, or custom panel-ready dishwasher.

Wash module and sensor diagnostics need brand-specific tools — generic fixes don't restore performance.

  • Electrical

Display shows E1, E15, F09, or persistent error code after the basics.

Sensor or control fault — clearing the code without diagnosis can flood the cabinet.

Other reasons to call

  • Dishes still dirty after all the above, and water enters the dishwasher cold — water heater or supply line issue.
  • Spray arms don't rotate during a cycle — circulation pump or wash motor failure.
  • Strong burning smell during the cycle — heating element shorted to the tub.
  • Error code on the display (E1, E15, F09, etc.).
  • Bosch, Miele, KitchenAid premium model with no improvement after the basics — sensor or wash module.

FAQs

Quick answers

  • Why is my dishwasher leaving food on dishes?

Almost always a clogged filter or spray arms. Modern dishwashers don't have a hard food disposer — the filter is meant to be cleaned every 1–2 weeks. Skipped maintenance is the #1 cause of poor cleaning.

  • Why does my dishwasher leave a white film on glasses?

Hard water scale and inadequate rinse aid. Run a vinegar or Affresh cycle, refill the rinse aid, and consider a water softener if you're on Minneapolis or central MN water.

  • Should I rinse dishes before loading?

Scrape, don't rinse. Modern dishwashers (and detergent enzymes) need food residue to work properly — too-clean dishes come out etched. Just remove large food chunks.

  • How hot should the water be for a dishwasher?

120°F minimum at the dishwasher inlet, ideally 125°F. Run the hot tap before starting the cycle and consider raising the water heater to 120–125°F.

  • How much does it cost to fix a dishwasher that's not cleaning?

Most causes are free DIY (filter, spray arm, rinse aid). Wash pump replacement: $280–$420. Heating element: $220–$320. Diagnostic if you've tried everything: flat $129, waived with repair.
