Ice Maker Not Working? 6 Things to Check First

Ice makers fail in three patterns: no ice at all, slow ice, or bad ice (hollow, small, or cloudy cubes). Each pattern points to a different cause. Work through these checks before assuming the ice maker module is dead — most fixes are $0 to $40.

Skip the guesswork — book a ice maker repair pro

Most ice maker symptoms get diagnosed and fixed on the first visit. Flat $129 diagnostic — fully waived when you approve the repair.

Most likely causes

  1. 1.Water filter clogged or overdue (every 6 months)
  2. 2.Freezer temperature too warm (must be 0–5°F to make ice)
  3. 3.Water supply line shut off or kinked
  4. 4.Ice maker switched off (small arm or toggle)
  5. 5.Water inlet valve clogged or failed
  6. 6.Ice maker control module failed

What you'll need

  • Replacement water filter (matches your fridge model)
  • Multimeter
  • Flashlight
  • Bucket

Step-by-step

How to fix it

  1. 1

Confirm the ice maker is switched on

Top-mount and side-by-side: there's a wire arm (the bail) that has to be in the down position to make ice. Built-in: there's an on/off toggle on the ice maker itself. French-door with in-door ice: check the front-panel button.

  2. 2

    Check the freezer temperature

Ice production stops above 5°F. Set the freezer to 0°F and let it run for 24 hours. If it can't hold 0°F, fix the freezer first — that's a separate problem.

  3. 3

    Replace the water filter

Filters clog gradually — slow ice and small cubes are the early warning signs, no ice is the late one. Replace it every 6 months whether it looks bad or not. Use the OEM filter for your model — aftermarket filters are the most-common cause of slow ice on Samsung and LG.

  4. 4

    Check the water supply line

Pull the fridge out. The water line is usually 1/4" copper or plastic running to a shutoff valve under the sink or in the basement. Confirm the valve is fully open. Check for kinks where the line wraps behind the fridge.

  5. 5

    Test the fill cycle

With the ice maker on and water connected, you can manually trigger a harvest cycle on most models — there's a small test button or hole on the front of the ice maker. Trigger it and watch: the arm should sweep, the cubes should drop, and water should fill the tray for ~7 seconds. No water = inlet valve or supply.

  6. 6

    Test the water inlet valve

The inlet valve is at the back-bottom of the fridge. With power off, ohm out the solenoid coil — should read 200–500Ω depending on model. Open or shorted = replace the valve ($40–$80 part).

Stop and call

When to put the screwdriver down

Safety + model triggers

  • Water leak

Water leaking from the back of the fridge or pooling under the freezer after troubleshooting.

Inlet valve cracked or supply-line ferrule failed — risks flooding the kitchen.

  • Built-in / premium

    Sub-Zero, undercounter Scotsman / U-Line / Marvel, or built-in column ice maker.

These have separate condensers and proprietary harvest mechanisms — generalist parts don't fit.

  • Electrical

Ice maker module hums constantly or trips the GFCI when plugged in.

Module short — keep cycling it and you risk popping the fridge's main control board.

Other reasons to call

  • You did all six checks and still no ice — the ice maker module or main board is the next suspect.
  • Water leaking from the back of the fridge or under the freezer — supply or valve failure.
  • Ice tastes or smells off and a fresh filter doesn't fix it — supply contamination or mold in the line.
  • Sub-Zero, built-in column, or undercounter ice machine — these have brand-specific harvest mechanisms.
  • Ice maker is making ice but won't dispense — auger motor or chute door issue.

FAQs

Quick answers

  • How long does it take an ice maker to make ice after being turned on?

First ice in 6–12 hours, full bin in 24–48 hours. If it's been more than 48 hours and you have less than half a bin, troubleshoot.

  • Why are my ice cubes hollow or small?

Low water pressure to the inlet valve — almost always a clogged water filter (most common) or a partially-closed shutoff valve. Replace the filter first.

  • Can a clogged water filter stop the ice maker entirely?

Yes. A fully-clogged filter can drop the pressure below the ~20 psi the inlet valve needs to open. Most fridges will display a 'replace filter' indicator before this happens — don't ignore it.

  • How much does it cost to fix a refrigerator ice maker?

Water filter: $50–$70 supplied. Inlet valve: $189–$280. Ice maker module: $250–$380. Our flat $149 fridge diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair.

  • Why does the ice maker stop after I install a new filter?

Air in the line. Dispense 2 quarts of water through the door dispenser to purge the line. Ice production resumes in 6–12 hours.
