A humming disposal that won't spin is jammed — almost always on a piece of bone, fruit pit, or silverware. Don't ignore the hum: leaving the motor energized against a locked rotor will burn it out in under a minute. Cut the power, free the rotor, hit reset.

Step-by-step
Flip the wall switch off AND unplug the disposal under the sink (or trip the breaker). Never reach into a disposal that has any chance of receiving power. This is the rule that keeps you with all ten fingers.
Shine a light into the disposal. You're looking for the obvious — a chicken bone, a peach pit, a teaspoon, or a wad of fibrous food wrapped around the impeller plate.
Use long tongs or needle-nose pliers — never your hand, even with the power off. Pull the jamming object out. If it's wrapped fiber, you may need to cut it out in pieces.
On the bottom-center of the disposal there's a hex socket. Insert the 1/4" hex wrench (taped under the sink, or any 1/4" Allen key) and rock it back and forth until the rotor spins freely a full revolution in both directions.
On the bottom of the disposal there's a small red button (the overload protector). If it popped out, push it firmly back in. If it pops out again immediately, the motor is overheating or shorted.
Plug in / restore breaker. Run cold water full blast and flip the switch for 5 seconds. Should run smoothly with no humming or rattling. If it hums again, repeat from step 1 — there's still something jammed.
