Try this first: (1) turn off the switch and unplug the disposal under the sink; (2) insert a 1/4" hex key into the center hole at the bottom of the unit (every InSinkErator and most others ship with one); (3) crank it back and forth until it spins freely; (4) press the small red reset button on the bottom; (5) plug back in and test. This fixes ~70% of humming disposals in under 5 minutes for $0. If it still hums after that, the motor capacitor or windings have failed — replacement runs $245–$395 installed. Don't ever put your hand into the disposal.
Root causes, ranked by what we find
What it is: A bone, fruit pit, or piece of glass wedged between the impeller and shredder ring. The motor energizes but can't spin so it just hums until the thermal overload trips. Symptom: loud hum, no rotation, sometimes a burning smell as the motor heats up.
Fix: Turn off and unplug. Insert 1/4" hex key in the bottom center hole, crank back and forth to free the jam. Press red reset button. Free.

What it is: After repeated humming or a long jam, the internal thermal overload trips to protect the motor. Symptom: completely dead — no hum, no nothing, switch flipped does nothing.
Fix: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal. If it pops back out immediately, the unit is overheated — wait 15 minutes and reset again.

What it is: If the flywheel turns freely with a hex key but the disposal still only hums when energized, the start capacitor has failed. Common on Waste King, GE, and lower-end InSinkErator units past year 7. Symptom: free spin by hand, still hums with no rotation under power.
Fix: Capacitor replacement on user-serviceable units; full disposal replacement on sealed-motor units. We bring both options.

What it is: Repeated humming through a jam burns the start winding. Symptom: smells like burnt electronics, doesn't even hum, reset doesn't restore power. The disposal is done.

What it is: Water under the sink with the disposal running is the mounting flange seal or a cracked housing — common at year 8–12. Symptom: drip under the sink during use, sometimes white plumber's putty visible at the sink flange.
Fix: Reseal mounting flange with new plumber's putty or replace the disposal if the housing is cracked.

Diagnostic order
Both the wall switch and the plug under the sink. Don't skip — this is the only safety step that matters. NEVER reach into the disposal.
Every InSinkErator and most other brands have a hex hole on the bottom center of the disposal — that's the motor shaft. Hex keys ship taped to new disposals; otherwise any 1/4" hex key works.
Insert the hex key fully and rotate it back and forth. You'll feel the jam break loose. Keep cranking until the shaft spins freely a full revolution in both directions.
Use tongs (not your hand) to remove any glass, bone, or pit you can see. Run cold water down the drain to flush smaller debris.
A small red button on the bottom of the disposal pops out when the thermal overload trips. Push it firmly back in.
Test with cold water flowing. If it spins, you're done. If it still hums, capacitor or motor — that's a service call.

Run ice cubes and rock salt through it monthly, then citrus peels with cold water. The grinder needs abrasive material to clean itself. For severe smells, mix baking soda + vinegar down the drain, wait 10 minutes, flush with hot water. Persistent smells = food trapped under the splash guard — pop it out, clean both sides.
Three places: (1) the top mounting flange seal — needs new plumber's putty, $185–$285 reseal; (2) the dishwasher inlet connection — re-tighten the clamp; (3) housing crack from age — disposal is done, replace. Don't ignore a leak — it rots the sink base cabinet fast.
