Maytag Washer Error Codes F51, F50, F9 E1, F5 E2 — What They Mean & How We Fix Them
Maytag Bravos (top-load), Centennial (top-load), Maxima (front-load), and Maytag Commercial washers run on the same Whirlpool VMW / Cabrio / Duet control platforms — fault codes are nearly identical to Whirlpool. The ones our Twin Cities trucks see most are F51 (rotor-position sensor — usually a loose basket bolt), F50 (motor stalled), F9 E1 (drain), and the famous Bravos LF (long fill).

How to enter Maytag washer diagnostic mode
Bravos / Centennial top-loaders (MVW): rotate the cycle knob clockwise 3 clicks, counter-clockwise 1, clockwise 3, counter-clockwise 1, clockwise 1 — all indicator lights illuminate (service mode). Press Start to run the automatic test. Maxima front-loaders (MHW): hold any 3 non-Start buttons in 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 pattern with the door closed. The washer cycles through inlet, drain, motor, heater, door-lock, and pressure sensor; stored codes display in the time window.
Most common Maytag washer error codes
F51 — Rotor-position sensor (Bravos / Centennial): the #1 Bravos top-load failure. Hex bolt at the bottom-center of the basket loosens from vibration — rotor wobbles, sensor reads erratic. Pull the agitator, torque the bolt to 14 ft-lb. Free fix on ~70% of F51s; rotor / sensor swap $245–$425 if not. | F50 — Motor stalled (Bravos): rotor not turning when commanded. Inspect for foreign object jammed under the basket. ($285–$525). | F9 E1 — Drain time exceeded: pump or restriction ($245–$365). | F5 E2 / F5 E1 — Door lock (Maxima front-load): PTC door lock or door not closing flush ($245–$345). | F7 E1 — Motor / motor control board (MCU) ($285–$525). | LF / LO FL / F8 E1 — Long fill: supply, mesh screens, inlet valve, or pressure-sensor air hose ($245–$345). | Sd / F0 E2 / SUd — Excess suds: wrong detergent, run Clean Washer empty, switch to HE. | uL — Unbalance: re-distribute small loads; suspension rods on Maxima ($385–$525). | F6 E3 — Console ↔ main board communication ($285–$425). | F6 E2 — Main ↔ MCU communication. | F2 E1 — Stuck key on touchpad. | F3 E1 — Pressure sensor / air hose ($225–$325). | F7 E5 — Shift actuator (Bravos top-load) ($285–$485). | dL / dU / F5 E3 — Door not locking (Maxima). | F1 / F1 E1 — Main control board ($385–$525). | F8 E2 — Dispenser fault (Maxima).
F51 on a Bravos is a 14 ft-lb torque check before any parts
Maytag Bravos washers (MVWB, MVWX) throw F51 more than any other code — but the actual cause 7 times out of 10 is NOT the rotor-position sensor. The 9/16-inch hex bolt at the bottom-center of the basket (under the agitator) backs out from spin-cycle vibration. The rotor wobbles, the sensor reads erratic position, and the washer aborts mid-spin with F51. Pull the agitator (lift straight up), torque the center bolt to 14 ft-lb with a socket. Free fix. Replace the rotor and sensor only if the bolt is tight and the rotor magnet shows visible damage.

FAQ
Minneapolis questions, answered
What does F51 mean on a Maytag Bravos washer?
F51 is the rotor-position sensor. But the actual cause is the basket center bolt loose 7 times out of 10. Pull the agitator (lifts straight up) and torque the 9/16-inch hex bolt at the basket bottom to 14 ft-lb. Free fix if that's the cause; rotor / sensor replacement $245–$425 if not.
What does F9 E1 mean on a Maytag washer?
F9 E1 is drain time exceeded — clogged pump impeller, kinked drain hose, or drain standpipe restriction. On Maxima front-loaders open the pump access door at the bottom-right and clear the impeller. Repair $245–$365.
What does LF or LO FL mean on a Maytag washer?
Long fill — the washer couldn't fill in time. Confirm hot and cold supply are fully open, clean the mesh screens where the supply hoses connect, and check that the pressure-sensor air hose isn't pinched. Inlet valve failure if supply is good — $245–$345.
How do I enter Maytag washer diagnostic mode?
Bravos / Centennial top-loaders: cycle knob clockwise 3 clicks, ccw 1, cw 3, ccw 1, cw 1. Maxima front-loaders: hold any 3 non-Start buttons in 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 pattern with door closed. The washer cycles through every subsystem and stores codes.
What does Sd or F0 E2 mean on a Maytag washer?
Excess suds. Maytag HE washers use about 1/4 the detergent of an old top-loader. Run a Clean Washer cycle empty, switch to HE-rated detergent, use 2 tablespoons for a normal load. Not a parts fault.
How much does Maytag washer repair cost?
Most Maytag washer repairs land $245–$485 all-in. F51 bolt torque is free. Door lock $245–$345. Drain pump $245–$365. Inlet valve $245–$345. Pressure sensor $225–$325. Shift actuator $285–$485. MCU $285–$525. Suspension rods (Maxima) $385–$525. The $149 trip fee is waived when you approve the repair.
Are Maytag, Whirlpool, and Kenmore washer codes the same?
Yes — Maytag (Bravos, Centennial, Maxima), Whirlpool (Cabrio, Duet), KitchenAid, Kenmore Elite, and Amana all run on the same VMW (top-load) and Cabrio/Duet (front-load) control platforms. Fault codes and most parts are cross-compatible.
