Whirlpool Washer Error Codes F9 E1, F8 E1, F5 E2, F7 E1 — What They Mean & How We Fix Them

Whirlpool, Maytag (Bravos / Centennial), Kenmore Elite, and Amana washers all share the same control platforms — VMW (vertical modular washer / top-load) and Duet / Cabrio (front-load). The fault codes are nearly identical across brands. The ones our Twin Cities trucks see most are F9 E1 (drain), F8 E1 (fill), F5 E2 (door lock), and the famously misdiagnosed F7 E1 / F51 motor codes.

What we fix in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis repair mix

How to enter Whirlpool washer diagnostic mode

VMW top-loaders (Cabrio, Bravos, Centennial — WTW models): rotate the cycle knob: clockwise 3 clicks, counter-clockwise 1 click, clockwise 3 clicks, counter-clockwise 1 click, clockwise 1 click. All indicator lights illuminate — you're in service mode. Press Start to run automatic test. Duet front-loaders (WFW): hold any 3 buttons (not Start/Cancel) in 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 pattern with the door closed. The washer cycles through inlet, drain, motor, heater, door-lock, and pressure sensor; stored codes display as F-E pairs.

Most common Whirlpool washer error codes

F9 E1 — Drain time exceeded: drain pump, clogged drain or pump impeller, drain hose above 96 in or kinked. Clear the pump before condemning ($245–$365). | F8 E1 / LO FL / LF — Long fill: supply off, mesh screens at the inlet valve clogged, valve solenoid failed, or pressure-sensor air hose pinched ($245–$345). | F5 E2 — Door lock (front-load): PTC door lock burned out, or door not closing flush (striker bent) ($245–$345). | F7 E1 — Motor / motor control board (Cabrio, Bravos): motor harness, rotor magnet, motor control board (MCU). Test before condemning the board ($285–$525). | F51 — Rotor position / motor sensor (Cabrio, Bravos): bolt at the bottom of the basket loose, rotor magnet, or sensor. Very common at year 4–7 ($245–$425). | F0 E2 / Sud / SUd — Excess suds: wrong detergent or overdose. Run a Clean Washer cycle empty, switch to HE. | F6 E3 — Console ↔ main board communication: ribbon cable in the console ($285–$425). | F6 E2 — Communication, main ↔ motor. | F2 E1 — Stuck key on touchpad ($285–$425). | uL — Load unbalance: re-distribute. Suspension on Duet front-loaders ($385–$525). | F3 E1 — Pressure sensor: air hose plugged or sensor failed ($225–$325). | F3 E2 — Pressure sensor calibration. | F7 E5 — Shift actuator (top-load VMW): clutch / shifter swap ($285–$485). | F8 E2 (Duet) — Dispenser fault: detergent door circuit. | F8 E3 — Overflow / pressure switch. | E1 F8 — Inlet thermistor.

What F51 really means on a Cabrio / Bravos

F51 is the rotor-position sensor on Whirlpool Cabrio / Maytag Bravos top-loaders — but in our field experience, 7 out of 10 F51 codes are NOT the sensor. The hex bolt at the bottom-center of the basket (under the impeller / agitator) backs out from vibration. The rotor wobbles, the sensor reads erratic position, and the washer throws F51 mid-spin. Pull the agitator, torque the bolt to 14 ft-lb, and the code clears for free. Replace the rotor and sensor only if the bolt is tight and the rotor magnet shows damage.

Whirlpool washer repair in the Twin Cities

We stock Whirlpool drain pumps, inlet valves, door locks, pressure sensors, motor control boards (MCU), shift actuators, suspension-rod kits for Duet front-loaders, rotor / Hall sensors for Cabrio + Bravos, and the common main control boards on the truck. Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Kenmore Elite, and Amana parts are largely cross-compatible. About 82% of repairs finish first visit. Flat $149 trip fee, waived on approval. 1-year written warranty.

FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • What does F9 E1 mean on a Whirlpool washer?

F9 E1 is drain time exceeded — pump, clogged impeller (coins, bra wires, lint), kinked drain hose, or drain standpipe restriction. On Duet front-loaders clear the pump access door at the bottom-right first. Repair $245–$365.

  • What does F51 mean on a Cabrio or Maytag Bravos washer?

F51 is a rotor-position sensor fault — but the hex bolt at the bottom-center of the basket is the actual cause 7 out of 10 times. The bolt loosens from vibration and the rotor wobbles. Pull the agitator, torque the bolt to 14 ft-lb. Free fix if that's the cause; sensor/rotor swap $245–$425 if not.

  • What does F5 E2 mean on a Whirlpool washer?

F5 E2 is a door lock fault on Duet / Cabrio front-loaders — the PTC door lock has burned out, or the door isn't closing flush (bent striker). Door lock assembly replacement runs $245–$345 all-in.

  • What does LO FL or LF mean on a Whirlpool washer?

LO FL (low fill) and LF (long fill) both mean the washer couldn't fill in time. Confirm hot and cold supply are on, clean the mesh screens at the back where the supply hoses connect, and check that the pressure-sensor air hose isn't pinched. If supply is good, the inlet valve has failed — $245–$345.

  • How do I enter Whirlpool washer diagnostic mode?

Top-loaders (Cabrio, Bravos, VMW): rotate the cycle knob clockwise 3, counter-clockwise 1, clockwise 3, counter-clockwise 1, clockwise 1. Front-loaders (Duet, WFW): hold any 3 non-Start buttons in 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 pattern with the door closed. The washer exercises every subsystem and stores codes.

  • How much does Whirlpool washer repair cost in Minneapolis?

Most Whirlpool washer repairs land $245–$485 all-in. Door lock $245–$345. Drain pump $245–$365. Inlet valve $245–$345. Pressure sensor $225–$325. Shift actuator $285–$485. Motor control board $285–$525. Suspension-rod kit $385–$525. The $149 trip fee is waived when you approve the repair.

  • Are Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore washer codes the same?

Yes — Whirlpool, Maytag (Bravos / Centennial), Kenmore Elite, KitchenAid, and Amana washers run on the same VMW (top-load) and Duet / Cabrio (front-load) control platforms. Fault codes and many internal parts are cross-compatible.
