Why a specialist
Whirlpool washers split into two very different platforms: top-load Cabrio / WTW (suspension-rod drive, splined hub, lid lock) and front-load Duet / WFW (rear tub bearing, door latch, bellow). Diagnosing the wrong platform is how a $235 drain-pump call turns into a $700 misdiagnosis. Every truck carries OEM parts for both platforms — drain pumps, lid locks, door latches, suspension rod kits, bellows, and the most-failed CCU/MCU boards.
We also know the F-code map cold — F8 E1 vs F9 E1 vs F7 E1 vs F70 / F71 each require a different diagnostic path. We test the harness and the sensor before quoting the board. About a third of suspected control-board failures are actually a $25 wiring connector or a $40 lid-lock striker.
Common repairs
The single most common Whirlpool washer call. F9 E1 on Duet and current front-load WFW units, or 'won't drain' on Cabrio and WTW top-load units. Usually a coin / sock / bra-wire blocking the pump impeller, but the pump motor itself fails open often enough that we replace it instead of just cleaning when the impeller shows wear. Whirlpool top-load Cabrio and WTW lid locks fail closed (clothes trapped) or fail open (won't start the cycle). Front-load WFW / Duet door latch fails the same way. We replace the OEM lid-lock or door-latch assembly and reset the central control. Code clears, washer runs.
Cabrio and WTW top-load suspension rods stretch and the basket starts knocking the cabinet during spin. We replace the suspension-rod kit (all four at once — replacing one stretches the others within months) and inspect the drive hub for the well-known Cabrio splined-hub failure.
Duet WFW rear tub bearings fail at year 7–10 with a freight-train spin noise; usually the seal goes first and the bearings die a few months later from washing in detergent. A bearing job is labor-heavy ($550–$795) and only worth it on units under ~6 years old or premium Duet platforms.
F7 E1 (motor speed sensor), F70 / F71 (control communication) on Duet and Cabrio units almost always mean the Central Control Unit (CCU) or Motor Control Unit (MCU) board. We carry the most-failed Whirlpool W10189966 / WPW10189966 boards on every truck and verify the wiring harness before swapping the board.
Torn bellow on Duet and WFW front-loads from coins or bra wires drains water onto the floor mid-cycle. The bellow is also where the front-load 'wet dog' smell comes from — bleach the bellow at year 3, replace it at year 7.
