WHIRLPOOL CABRIO · F51 ERROR

Whirlpool Cabrio F51 Error Rotor Position Sensor — Cheap Fix, Common Misdiagnosis

F51 (sometimes F1 E1 on newer Cabrios) on a Whirlpool Cabrio top-loader almost always means the rotor position sensor (RPS) under the tub lost its read. Many shops misdiagnose it as the drive motor and quote $700+ — the right fix is usually a $225–$345 RPS swap.

What we fix in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis repair mix

What F51 actually is

The rotor position sensor (RPS / Hall sensor) is a small PCB bolted to the stator under the tub. It tells the control board where the rotor is and how fast it's spinning. When it fails or its connector corrodes, the controller throws F51 and stops the cycle.

Check the basket nut first (free fix)

Before we condemn the RPS, we pull the basket and confirm the basket-nut torque. A loose nut lets the rotor wobble enough to scramble the sensor read and throw F51 with the original sensor working fine. Retorque to spec — done in 20 minutes, no parts.

RPS replacement

Remove the rotor, unbolt the RPS from the stator, install OEM replacement, reassemble, retorque basket nut. $225–$345 OEM installed.

We service all Whirlpool Cabrio, Maytag Bravos, and Kenmore Oasis top-loaders (same platform). RPS, stator, rotor, drive motor, basket nut, drain pump on the truck. 1-year written warranty.

Field-service notes on washer repair

On washer repair, we keep the diagnostic tight because the failure catalog on this brand is well-documented. Well water in the outer western suburbs (Minnetonka, Wayzata, Orono) adds iron and manganese loading that plugs ice-maker inlet screens and dishwasher wash-arm nozzles inside 18 months without a softener.

Because this page focuses on what f51 actually is, our tech opens the call by isolating that subsystem before touching anything else. Wear parts (belts, pumps, igniters, valves) ship from our truck stock; boards and sealed-system parts are OEM-only from Marcone or the manufacturer's direct distributor. The $149 residential diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you approve; if you don't, you pay only the diagnostic and we leave a written scope. Every completed repair carries a 1-year parts and labor warranty in writing. The section above covers the specific failure surface — the rotor position sensor (rps / hall sensor) is a small pcb bolted to the stator under the tub.

We stock the top-30 wear items for this brand on the truck, so most first-visit repairs close same-day. We're EPA 608 certified for sealed-system and refrigerant work, licensed and insured in Minnesota, and every tech carries a factory diagnostic laptop for brand-specific service modes. If the model is out of parts support, we'll say so on the first call and refund the diagnostic — that's the honest read on a repair-vs-replace decision, and it's the same read we'd give a family member calling about the same washer.

FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • What does F51 mean on a Whirlpool Cabrio?

Rotor position sensor (RPS) fault. Sensor under the tub on the stator. Common at year 5–8. We keep COI on file for the major Minneapolis/Saint Paul property portfolios, and our dispatch knows the freight-elevator and lockbox quirks of each building.

  • Do I really need a new motor?

Probably not. F51 is almost always the RPS sensor, not the motor. Get a second opinion if a tech quotes a motor without testing the RPS first.

  • Is F51 the same as F1 E1?

On newer Cabrio/Bravos models, F1 E1 is the same condition. RPS or motor-control fault.

  • How much to fix Whirlpool Cabrio F51?

Most Whirlpool washer repairs in the Twin Cities land $225–$345 all-in — parts, labor, and the $149 trip fee (which is credited toward the repair when you approve the work). Sealed-system or compressor work runs higher and we always quote that up front. Every job ships with a 1-year written parts-and-labor warranty.
