A warm fridge in the Twin Cities winter is one thing. A warm fridge in July is a four-figure grocery emergency. About seventy percent of our refrigerator calls trace back to one of four root causes: a failed evaporator fan, a stuck defrost system, a leaking door gasket, or a bad inverter / start relay on the compressor. The other thirty percent split between ice-maker boards, water inlet valves, control boards, and the occasional sealed-system leak that requires recovery, repair, and recharge — work most general appliance shops won't touch. We will. Two of our senior techs are EPA Section 608 certified specifically for sealed-system work on Sub-Zero and built-in column units.

If your fridge is on its third year of acting up, we'll be honest about repair-versus-replace. There's a number — usually around fifty percent of new replacement cost on appliances older than ten years — where we tell you to put the money toward a new unit instead. Our techs aren't paid on parts, so the recommendation you get is the same one we'd give our own family.

Built-in refrigeration is its own discipline. The condenser sits at the top, the cabinet is integrated into custom panels, and a sealed-system leak can mean a full evac-and-recharge that takes specialty tools and a recovery machine. We service every Sub-Zero generation from the classic 500/600 series through the current Designer line, including IT-30CIID, IT-36CIID and BI-36U installations across Edina, Wayzata, North Oaks, Lake Minnetonka, and the western suburbs. Our flat refrigerator diagnostic is $149 and it's fully waived the moment you approve the repair. Most jobs land between $220 and $560 all-in. Sealed-system work runs higher — we'll always quote that in writing before we open a line. Every repair includes a 1-year parts-and-labor warranty in writing, not buried in fine print. If the same failure comes back inside that year, we come back free.

Maintenance that actually keeps a fridge alive

Two minutes a season is the difference between a fridge that lasts twelve years and one that limps to seven. Vacuum the condenser coils — they're either behind the kick plate or up top behind the grille on built-ins — and brush the fins gently. Wipe the door gasket with warm soapy water and check the seal with a dollar bill: if it slides out without resistance, the gasket is leaking warm air and your compressor is paying for it. Pull the unit out once a year and clean behind it. Rotate the contents so air can move around the vents. Don't pack the freezer wall-to-wall.

When to DIY and when to call us

Homeowner-friendly: cleaning the condenser coils, swapping a door gasket, clearing a defrost drain, replacing an ice maker assembly (we have a step-by-step LG ice maker guide if that's what you're chasing), and replacing a basic water inlet valve. These are reachable with hand tools and a YouTube video that matches your model number exactly.

Tech-level work: anything inside the sealed system (compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer/filter), control-board diagnostics, inverter-board failures on Samsung and LG linear-compressor units, defrost-system diagnostics across the heater/thermostat/board chain, and any built-in column or Sub-Zero work. The cost of swapping the wrong $300 part is more than the diagnostic — that's why we charge the flat fee up front and waive it the moment you approve the actual repair.
