Whirlpool Dryer Error Codes F01, F22, F24, AF, L2 — What They Mean & How We Fix Them
Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Kenmore Elite, and Amana dryers share most fault codes. The ones our Twin Cities trucks see most are AF (airflow / vent restriction — the dryer is telling you the vent needs cleaning), F24 / F22 (thermistor faults), F28/F29 (communication or moisture sensor), and L2 (low voltage from a half-tripped breaker).

How to enter Whirlpool dryer diagnostic mode
Most Whirlpool / Maytag dryers built 2010+ (Cabrio, Duet, WED, MED, WGD, MGD) enter diagnostics with the cycle knob rotated: from any position, turn the knob clockwise 3 clicks, counter-clockwise 1 click, clockwise 1 click, counter-clockwise 1 click — pause — then press Start. The display shows software version and steps through heater, motor, moisture sensor, thermistor, and door switch tests. Some Duet front-load dryers use the 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 button-pattern entry (any 3 buttons not Start/Cancel). Stored codes display as F-codes after the test.
Most common Whirlpool dryer error codes
AF — Airflow restriction (the dryer measured outlet temp vs cycle time and decided the vent is plugged). Free fix when you clean the vent ($185 add-on). | L2 — Low or no line voltage on one leg of the 240V supply: usually a half-tripped breaker, sometimes a corroded outlet. Flip the breaker fully off then back on; if L2 returns, call an electrician for the outlet. | F01 — Main control board fault ($385–$525). | F22 — Outlet thermistor open or short ($225–$285). | F24 — Inlet thermistor open or short ($225–$285). | F25 — Drive motor speed sensor or motor ($285–$425). | F28 — Main control ↔ motor control communication error ($285–$485). | F29 — Moisture sensor wiring (drum strips) — clean strips first; sensor wiring second. | F30 — Restricted vent code on newer Cabrio platform (same as AF). | F31 — Motor speed fault. | HE / E1 / E2 — Heater open (electric) or thermistor open (legacy). | dF — Door fault — door not registering closed. | PF — Power failure — just resume. | EOL — End-of-load fault (cycle ended abnormally). | tS — Open thermistor (legacy).
Almost every AF / F30 fixes itself with a vent cleaning
Whirlpool / Maytag dryers measure outlet air temperature and cycle time, and throw AF or F30 when the math says the vent is restricted — BEFORE the high-limit thermal fuse trips. That's a gift. Clean the vent run from the dryer outlet to the exterior cap before you replace any parts. Add-on dryer-vent cleaning is $185 on most Twin Cities homes. If you ignore AF, the next code is HE (blown heater after the thermal fuse trips) and the repair triples.

FAQ
Minneapolis questions, answered
What does AF mean on a Whirlpool dryer?
AF means the dryer detected an airflow restriction — the vent needs cleaning. It's a gift: AF triggers BEFORE the high-limit thermal fuse blows and BEFORE the heating element fails. Clean the vent run from dryer outlet to exterior cap ($185 add-on) and AF clears. Ignore it and the next code is HE — heater open.
What does L2 mean on a Whirlpool dryer?
L2 is low or no line voltage on one of the 240V legs — usually a half-tripped breaker (very common; the breaker looks ON but one leg has tripped). Flip the breaker fully OFF then back ON. If L2 returns, the outlet itself is corroded or a wire is loose — that's an electrician, not us.
What does F22 or F24 mean on a Whirlpool dryer?
F22 is the outlet thermistor (open/short); F24 is the inlet thermistor. Cheap sensor swaps — $225–$285 all-in. Often paired with a vent inspection because heat soak from vent restriction shortens thermistor life.
How do I enter Whirlpool dryer diagnostic mode?
Cycle knob: clockwise 3 clicks, counter-clockwise 1, clockwise 1, counter-clockwise 1, pause, press Start. The dryer cycles through heater, motor, moisture sensor, thermistor, and door switch tests. Some Duet front-loaders use the button-pattern entry (any 3 non-Start buttons in 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 pattern).
What does HE or E1 mean on a Whirlpool dryer?
HE (or E1 / E2 on legacy displays) means the heating element circuit is open — usually because the high-limit thermal fuse tripped from a restricted vent and then the element itself failed shortly after. Replace element + thermal fuse + thermistor AND clean the vent run. Repair $345–$485 plus optional $185 vent cleaning.
How much does Whirlpool dryer repair cost?
Most Whirlpool dryer repairs land $245–$485 all-in. Thermistor $225–$285. Door switch $225–$345. Heater + thermal fuse $345–$485 (add $185 vent cleaning). Gas valve coils $245–$345. Motor speed sensor $285–$425. Main control board $385–$525. The $149 trip fee is waived when you approve the repair.
Are Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore dryer codes the same?
Yes — Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Kenmore Elite, and Amana dryers share the same control platforms. Fault codes (AF, L2, F01, F22, F24, F28, F30, HE) and many internal parts are cross-compatible.
