Samsung Dryer Error Codes tE, hE, dE, dC, FE — What They Mean & How We Fix Them

Samsung electric (DV) and gas (DVG) dryers share most fault codes. The ones our Twin Cities trucks see most are tE (thermistor — almost always lint inside the moisture-sensor housing), hE (heater — element or thermal fuse blown after a vent clog), dC (won't start with door closed), and dF (door switch).

What we fix in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis repair mix

How to enter Samsung dryer diagnostic mode

Most Samsung DV / DVG dryers built 2014+ enter diagnostic mode by powering off, then holding Temp + Time (or Adjust Time + Mixed Load Bell on some models) while pressing Power once. The display shows software version, then steps through heater, motor, moisture sensor, door switch, and thermistor tests. The Smart Check tone can be transmitted into the Samsung Smart Home app to decode every stored fault. On WashTower stacked units the entry sequence uses the dryer's right-side buttons.

Most common Samsung dryer error codes

tE / tE3 / tC — Thermistor / temperature sensor: usually lint coating the moisture-sensor strips inside the drum, sometimes a true sensor failure. Clean the strips with rubbing alcohol first (free fix); if tE returns, sensor replacement runs $225–$345. | hE / HC / H1 — Heater: on electric models, heating element open after a vent clog tripped the thermal fuse; on gas models, igniter or gas valve coil. Always includes a vent inspection. ($345–$485 electric, $325–$465 gas). | dE / dC — Door not registering closed: bent latch, door switch failed, or magnet missing on the door ($225–$345). | dF — Door switch electrical fault ($225–$285). | bE / BE — Stuck button on control panel ($285–$425). | FE — Power-supply frequency / voltage fault — usually a building electrical issue, sometimes the noise filter ($225–$385). | 9E2 — Gas valve coil (gas dryers only): one of the two coils failed and the burner won't light ($245–$345). | Et — Main control board fault ($385–$525). | oD / OD — Overdry: moisture sensor sees clothes are dry too fast — usually a restricted vent or coated moisture sensor. Clean vent + sensor strips first. | AC — Sub-board communication ($285–$425). | dE2 — Secondary door switch on stacked units. | E2 (legacy) — Stuck key. | ts (legacy) — Thermistor short.

Almost every hE / heater code includes a vent inspection

On Samsung electric dryers an hE code almost always means the heating element burned open AFTER the high-limit thermal fuse tripped — and the thermal fuse trips because lint and dryer vent restriction cause the cabinet to overheat. We replace the element + thermal fuse + thermistor AND inspect / clean the vent run; replacing only the element without clearing the vent guarantees the new element fails again inside 6 months. Add-on dryer-vent cleaning is $185 from the meter to the cap on most Twin Cities homes.

Samsung dryer repair in the Twin Cities

We stock Samsung heating elements, thermal fuses, high-limit thermostats, thermistors, moisture sensors, door switches and latches, gas valve coils, igniters, drum rollers and belts, and the common DV / DVG main control boards on the truck. FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • What does tE mean on a Samsung dryer?

tE / tE3 is the thermistor or moisture sensor — most often the two metal moisture-sensor strips inside the drum are coated with fabric-softener residue, which makes the dryer mis-read drying time. Wipe the strips with rubbing alcohol on a paper towel. If tE returns, the thermistor itself ($225–$345) is next.

  • What does hE mean on a Samsung dryer?

hE (HC, H1) is a heater fault. On electric dryers the heating element has opened — usually after the high-limit thermal fuse tripped from vent overheating, so we replace element + thermal fuse + thermistor AND inspect the vent. On gas dryers it's the igniter or gas valve coil. Repair $325–$485 plus optional $185 vent cleaning.

  • What does dC mean on a Samsung dryer?

dC means the door isn't registering as closed when you press Start. Open and firmly re-close the door. If dC persists, the door switch or magnet has failed, or the latch is bent. Repair $225–$345.

  • How do I enter Samsung dryer diagnostic mode?

Most Samsung DV / DVG dryers enter diagnostics with power off, then hold Temp + Time (or Adjust Time + Mixed Load Bell) while pressing Power once. The dryer cycles through heater, motor, moisture sensor, door switch, and thermistor tests. Smart Check tone can also be transmitted into the Samsung Smart Home app.

  • Why does my Samsung dryer keep blowing the thermal fuse?

A blown thermal fuse means the cabinet got too hot — almost always a restricted dryer vent. Replace the fuse + element only AFTER the vent has been cleaned from the dryer outlet to the exterior cap. Skipping the vent cleaning means the new fuse trips inside a few cycles.

  • How much does Samsung dryer repair cost?

Most Samsung dryer repairs land $245–$485 all-in. Thermistor $225–$345. Door switch $225–$345. Heater + thermal fuse $345–$485 (add $185 vent cleaning). Gas valve coil $245–$345. Main control board (rare) $385–$525. The $149 trip fee is waived when you approve the repair.

  • Is a Samsung dryer worth repairing?

Yes for almost any repair under $485 on a unit under 12 years old — replacement runs $850–$1,800+. Stacked WashTower units are always worth repairing. The exception is a control-board failure on a 10+ year unit; at that point the math is closer to replacement.
