Samsung Dryer HE Error Heating-Element Fault — What It Means & How We Fix It

HE (often shown as hE on older Samsung DV electric and gas dryers) is a heating-system fault — the dryer's thermistor reported that the drum did not reach target heat in the expected time window, or the heating element is drawing the wrong current. It's almost always one of four things, in this order: clogged dryer vent, blown thermal fuse, open heating element (electric) or failed gas valve solenoid (gas), or a failed thermistor.

What we fix in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis repair mix

What HE / hE actually means

HE is a heating-system fault. The thermistor on the heater housing reported either no temperature rise after the heater was commanded on, OR a temperature pattern outside the expected window. On electric dryers (DV45 / DV50 / DV52) the fault usually traces to a blown thermal fuse caused by airflow restriction. On gas dryers (DV45G / DV52G) the gas valve solenoid is the more common parts failure.

Step 1 — clean the full dryer vent (40% of calls)

Disconnect the vent at the back of the dryer and clean BOTH the flex hose AND the rigid duct run to the outside hood. A 25 ft duct run with one elbow should free-flow with no lint visible at any point. Verify the outside hood flapper opens freely. A blocked vent overheats the high-limit thermostat which blows the thermal fuse on the next cycle — installing a new fuse without clearing the vent burns the next one out within days.

Step 2 — test the thermal fuse

On the heater housing (bottom of cabinet, electric dryers — top-rear on some models) is a small white thermal fuse with two wires. Pull power, meter the fuse for continuity. Open = blown. Replace with OEM thermal fuse ($165–$245 installed). Re-test continuity on the high-limit thermostat next to it — replace if open.

Step 3 — electric heating element or gas valve solenoid

Electric: meter the heating element for ~10–15 ohms across the terminals. Open = burned coil, replace assembly ($285–$425 installed). Gas: meter the two booster coils on the gas valve. Either coil open = won't open the valve, no flame. Replace the coil kit ($245–$345 installed).

Why Twin Cities Samsung dryers throw HE so often

Most Twin Cities laundry rooms vent through a long, multi-elbow run to the outside hood — basements with the dryer on an interior wall need 20–35 ft of duct to reach exterior. That length plus winter ice on the outside hood flapper creates the airflow restriction that overheats Samsung dryers. We replace far more thermal fuses than heating elements — and we always clean the vent before quoting a heater.

Field-service notes on dryer repair

On dryer repair, we keep the diagnostic tight because the failure catalog on this brand is well-documented. Winter garage and porch installs see cold-start cycles that stress compressor start capacitors and inverter boards — a failure profile that barely exists in warmer climates.

Because this page focuses on what he / he actually means, our tech opens the call by isolating that subsystem before touching anything else. Wear parts (belts, pumps, igniters, valves) ship from our truck stock; boards and sealed-system parts are OEM-only from Marcone or the manufacturer's direct distributor. The $149 residential diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you approve; if you don't, you pay only the diagnostic and we leave a written scope. Every completed repair carries a 1-year parts and labor warranty in writing. The section above covers the specific failure surface — he is a heating-system fault.

We stock the top-30 wear items for this brand on the truck, so most first-visit repairs close same-day. We're EPA 608 certified for sealed-system and refrigerant work, licensed and insured in Minnesota, and every tech carries a factory diagnostic laptop for brand-specific service modes. If the model is out of parts support, we'll say so on the first call and refund the diagnostic — that's the honest read on a repair-vs-replace decision, and it's the same read we'd give a family member calling about the same dryer.

FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • What does HE mean on a Samsung dryer?

HE / hE is a heating-system fault — the dryer can't reach target heat. The cause is usually a clogged vent that blew the thermal fuse, then a failed heating element or gas valve coil, then a failed thermistor.

  • How do I reset a Samsung dryer HE error?

Cancel the cycle, unplug for 60 seconds, plug back in, run a Timed Dry 30-min cycle. If HE returns within 5 minutes, the thermal fuse or heating element is the cause — schedule service. If HE clears, clean the dryer vent before the next load.

  • Will a clogged vent really cause HE?

Yes — roughly 40% of HE calls trace to vent restriction. The high-limit thermostat trips first; the thermal fuse blows next. Replacing parts without clearing the vent burns out the replacement within weeks.

  • How much does it cost to fix a Samsung HE error?

$165–$245 if only the thermal fuse is blown. $285–$425 if the heating element is open. $245–$345 for a gas valve coil kit. Add $95–$185 for vent cleaning. Twin Cities flat $149 trip fee is credited toward the repair.

  • Is HE on Samsung dryer the same as E:01 or E:02?

    No. HE / hE = heating fault. E:01 = control-board self-check fault. E:02 = sensor / harness fault. Different causes, different fixes.

  • Do you service Samsung dryers in Minneapolis?

Yes — factory-trained on Samsung DV electric and gas dryers. OEM parts via Samsung Parts. Same-day or next-day appointments. 1-year written parts-and-labor warranty on every job.
