An ice maker that stops working is almost always a water-supply problem before it's a mechanical problem. Here's the order to check, from "free fix" to "call a tech."
1. Is the ice maker turned on?
Sounds dumb. Half of "broken" ice makers in Minneapolis and Saint Paul homes are switched off. Look for:
- A wire arm in the ice bin that lifts up to "off"
- A toggle switch on the front of the ice maker
- A menu setting on the fridge display
Make sure it's on. Move on if it is.
2. Freezer temperature
Ice makers stop producing when the freezer climbs above about 10°F. If your freezer dial drifted, ice production drops or stops entirely. Set the freezer to 0°F (or -18°C) and give it 24 hours.
Symptom of low freezer temp: the ice in the bin looks softer or clumped together rather than hard cubes.
3. Water supply shut off
The 1/4" plastic or copper line that feeds the fridge runs from a saddle valve under the sink, from the basement plumbing, or from a dedicated shutoff behind the fridge. Any one of those can be closed accidentally — especially after kitchen plumbing work.
Pull the fridge out and check the valve. Open = handle parallel to the line.
4. Frozen water line
Common in Saint Paul and Minneapolis homes where the fridge sits against an exterior wall. A long water line with low flow can freeze inside the fill tube at the back of the freezer.
Unplug the fridge, pull it away from the wall, leave the freezer door open, and wait 6-8 hours for the line to thaw. If the ice maker comes back to life and stops again in a week, you've got a freeze problem and need to insulate or reroute the line.
5. Clogged water filter
A water filter that's past its replacement interval restricts flow until the ice maker can't fill. Most fridges flag this with a light on the door, but not all. If you can't remember the last filter change, it's been too long.
While you're there: a brand-new aftermarket filter that doesn't fit perfectly can also restrict flow. Use OEM if the off-brand is causing trouble.
6. Bad water inlet valve
The valve on the back of the fridge that opens to let water into the ice maker. When the solenoid fails, the ice maker tries to fill but no water arrives. You'll usually hear it cycling normally — there's just no ice at the end.
Diagnostic: most ice makers have a service mode (Whirlpool/KitchenAid uses a small button or two-pin jumper on the front of the ice maker housing). Triggering a fill cycle and watching for water tells you whether the valve is the problem.
7. Failed ice maker module
The whole ice maker unit can fail — the ejector motor, the optics, or the control module inside. On most refrigerators these are replaced as a complete assembly, not individually.
This is when you call us. Diagnosis takes 15 minutes; the part is $80-200 depending on the brand.
What to check before you call
- Switch is on, freezer is at 0°F
- Water shutoff is open
- Filter has been changed in the last 6 months
- Wait 24 hours after any change before declaring it broken (ice makers cycle slowly)
When to call a tech
Bad inlet valve, dead ice-maker module, or a fill tube frozen so badly the heater is cooked — that's a refrigerator repair call. We carry universal ice maker assemblies for Whirlpool, KitchenAid, GE, Samsung, and LG on the truck.
Book a service call and we'll get the cubes flowing.
