This guide answers the most common questions about dishwasher not draining with 2026 Twin Cities pricing, brand-specific fixes, and when to call a factory-trained tech.

Quick answer: Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid dishwashers share the same Whirlpool drain platform — when they won't drain, 7 out of 10 calls are food debris in the chopper/sump screen, 2 out of 10 are a failed drain pump motor, and 1 out of 10 is the OWI (optical water indicator) sensor. Order of operations: clear the sump filter, then test the drain pump (hums but no flow = impeller jammed; silent = motor or control board). All-in repair: $245–$385.

Why these three brands fail the same way

Whirlpool owns the Maytag and KitchenAid brands, and post-2015 dishwashers from all three share the same direct-drive WPL motor/pump platform — same drain motor (W11084656), same sump assembly, same OWI sensor, same chopper. The cosmetic differences (door style, racks, console) are all that really separate them. Which means the diagnostic path is identical; only the error display differs.

Step 1 — clear the sump filter (5 minutes, free)

Pull the bottom rack. The cylindrical filter twists counterclockwise out of the sump (Whirlpool/Maytag) or lifts out of the lower spray arm (KitchenAid). Rinse it under the tap, scrub the mesh with a soft brush, and inspect the sump well underneath for glass shards, fruit pits, or a small bone — these jam the chopper and stop the drain pump cold. About 70% of "not draining" calls are solved here.

Step 2 — test the drain pump

Run a drain cycle (Whirlpool: hold the Heated Dry button while closing the door for ~5 sec to enter diagnostic; KitchenAid 6th-Sense: press High Temp + Heated Dry + High Temp + Heated Dry within 5 sec). Listen for the pump:

  • Pump runs but no water moves → impeller jammed by debris. Pull the pump (1/4 turn release on post-2015 models) and clear it.
  • Pump hums then trips → motor seized. Replace drain pump assembly (~$95 part, $245–$345 installed).
  • Pump is silent → control board not sending voltage, or harness/check valve issue. Multimeter the pump leads at the board (120 VAC during drain segment).

What does Whirlpool F8 E1 actually mean?

F8 E1 on a Whirlpool dishwasher is the OWI (Optical Water Indicator) reporting a stuck or dirty reading. The OWI is a little optical sensor in the sump that measures water turbidity to decide how long to wash. When it gets coated with hard-water film (extremely common on Twin Cities and Hudson WI well water), it reads "always dirty" and the machine refuses to advance through the drain segment. Fix: wipe the OWI lens with a vinegar rag — if that doesn't clear the code, replace the sensor ($45 part, $215–$275 installed).

Maytag dishwasher won't drain but the pump runs — what now?

Three possibilities, in order: (1) drain hose looped through a high-loop that's slumped — pull it under the sink, confirm the high point is above the disposal tap. (2) Disposal knockout plug never removed (if a new disposal was installed and you've never had drainage) — pop the plastic knockout out of the disposal inlet. (3) Check valve in the sump stuck open — water that drains comes right back in. Replace the check valve flapper ($25 part, $185 installed).

How much does it cost to fix a dishwasher that won't drain in 2026?

All prices include the $149 trip fee (credited to repair), OEM parts, and a 1-year parts & labor warranty.

Is it worth fixing or should I replace?

For Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid dishwashers under 8 years old, repair almost always wins. A new comparable Whirlpool runs $649–$849; a KitchenAid runs $999–$1,499. Even the most expensive single repair ($485 control board) is well under replacement cost. Past 10 years with multiple failing systems, replace — but a single drain issue on a 6-year-old machine is a clear repair.
