WRS side-by-sides use an emitter + receiver pair (optics board) to sense ice-bin level. When the emitter LED dies or the receiver clouds with frost, the ice maker thinks the bin is always full and stops producing. Test: cover the emitter with your finger for 10 seconds, uncover — you should hear a fill cycle within 6 minutes. If nothing, optics board $245–$345 installed.
Harvest motor / module — Whirlpool flex-tray
Older Whirlpool ice makers use a thermostat + heat-bar + harvest motor. When the harvest motor seizes, cubes never eject and the tray fills with one solid mass. Whole-module replacement is faster than rebuilding internal parts. $245–$385 OEM installed.
Water inlet valve — the universal cause
The dual-coil inlet valve at the back of the fridge feeds both the dispenser and the ice maker. When the ice-maker coil weakens, you get a slow drip into the tray that freezes mid-fill and stops the cycle. Symptom: dispenser water still works fine, but ice production drops to nothing. $185–$245 OEM installed.
