What F9 E1 actually means

F9 E1 is a flood / overflow fault. A foam-and-float switch in the base of the dishwasher tripped because water leaked into the base pan — either because the drain side is blocked (water backs up out the sump) or a hose / gasket is leaking. The control disables the wash pump and runs the drain pump until the float resets.

Step 1 — check the disposal knockout (post-install F9 E1)

If F9 E1 appeared right after a new garbage disposal was installed, this is almost certainly the cause. New disposals ship with a sealed knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet — if the plumber forgot to punch it out, the dishwasher drain has nowhere to go and floods the base pan within seconds. Tap out the knockout with a screwdriver and fish the plastic disc out of the disposal. Free fix.

Step 2 — drain hose at the high loop / air gap

Pull the dishwasher forward (kill power first). Inspect the drain hose where it loops up under the sink — should be at the highest point above the disposal inlet. Kinks here cause backup. If there's an air gap on the sink deck, pop the chrome cap and check for debris.

Step 3 — drain pump or float switch

If drain side is clear, pull the lower kick panel, dry the base pan, and watch for the leak source on the next cycle. Pump-housing gasket and the inlet-valve assembly are the two most common leak points. We meter the flood switch — if it's stuck closed, F9 E1 persists even with a dry base.
