1. Failed defrost system (~45% of calls)
What it is: Modern frost-free freezers run a 20–30 minute defrost cycle every 8–12 hours — a small heater melts ice off the evaporator coil while the compressor rests. If the heater fails, the thermostat fails open, or the defrost control board's timer fails, ice accumulates on the coil until airflow is choked and the freezer can't keep temperature. Symptom: sheet-ice on the rear evaporator panel, fan whine as the fan blade hits ice.
Fix: Diagnose with a forced-defrost test, then replace the failed component (defrost heater, defrost thermostat, OR defrost control board). 2. Compromised door gasket
What it is: Gaskets last 10–15 years on most freezers. When they fail, warm humid kitchen air leaks in, condenses on the cold evaporator, and freezes into frost. Symptom: frost on the gasket itself, frost on the front edges of the freezer interior, condensation on the cabinet face around the door.
Fix: Replace the gasket — the entire perimeter, not just the bad corner. Warm the new gasket with a hair dryer before installing to relax the rubber for a clean seal.

3. Stuck damper (French-door / 4-door units)
What it is: French-door and 4-door refrigerators use a motorized damper to share cold air between the fresh-food and freezer compartments. If the damper sticks open, humid fresh-food air pours into the freezer and freezes. Common Samsung RF and LG LFXS / LRMVS failure at year 5–8.
Fix: Damper assembly replacement. On Samsung the damper motor and the damper baffle are sold separately — we stock both on the truck.

4. Door propped open by an overloaded bin or sagging hinge
What it is: Most homeowners don't realize a 2mm gap is enough to build a frost wall over a week. An overloaded ice bin, a too-tall jar in the door, or a sagging hinge on a heavy French door can hold the door open without anyone noticing. Symptom: frost only in humid weather (June–August in the Twin Cities), gone in winter.
Fix: Re-load the door so nothing protrudes past the gasket plane. If the hinge sags (common on Samsung French-door at year 7+), the hinge kit is $145–$185 in parts.

5. Ice-maker chute door not sealing
What it is: External ice / water dispensers have a small spring-loaded chute door that should snap shut after every dispense. When it sticks open, warm air pours through the chute into the ice bin and the bin freezes into one solid mass.
Fix: Replace the chute door assembly or just the spring / hinge. 30-minute job.

6. Chest freezer — lid gasket or thermostat
What it is: Chest freezers (basement / garage) build frost from a worn lid gasket OR from a thermostat that's set warmer than 0°F. A garage chest freezer in summer humidity also frosts faster than the same unit in a basement.
Fix: Verify temp setting (0°F or colder), replace lid gasket if compressed flat, replace cold-control thermostat if temp drift confirmed.
