Fridge Warm but Freezer Cold in Edina One Circuit, Not the Whole Unit

Why Edina kitchens see this split failure

Edina has the highest built-in refrigeration density in the metro — Sub-Zero BI and IC columns, Thermador freedom columns, and Miele integrated units through Country Club, Rolling Green, Indian Hills, and Interlachen. Many of those use dual refrigeration: two separate evaporators, two fans, two circuits. When the fresh-food circuit's fan or defrost component fails, the freezer stays exactly at 0°F while the refrigerator climbs toward room temperature. Owners often assume the unit is finished. It is not — the repair is limited to one circuit.

On the single-evaporator units more common in Morningside and the Southdale-area condos and townhomes, the same symptom comes from the shared air path: one evaporator cools both compartments, a fan pushes part of that air through a duct into the fresh-food side, and a damper meters it. A dead fan or a damper stuck shut leaves the freezer cold and the refrigerator warm.

The third path in both designs is defrost. Frost accumulating on the evaporator progressively blocks airflow, and the fresh-food side — being at the far end of the duct — starves first. A refrigerator that recovers for a day after an overnight unplug and then fails again is telling you exactly that.

What causes the warm-fridge split

1. 1. Fresh-food evaporator fan failed

   On dual-refrigeration built-ins, the fan serving the refrigerator circuit has quit. The freezer is unaffected. Scoped repair, not a whole-unit problem.

2. 2. Air damper stuck closed

   On single-evaporator units, a motorized damper controls how much cold air reaches the fridge. When the actuator fails or the flap ices, the fresh-food side gets nothing.

3. 3. Defrost circuit icing the evaporator

   Frost blocks airflow, and the compartment farthest from the coil warms first. Temporary recovery after an overnight unplug confirms it.

4. 4. Drain heater fault on a column

   Common on Sub-Zero IC units — ice builds around the drain until it blocks the evaporator. Repairable, but requires a pull-out to reach.

5. 5. Fresh-food thermistor out of spec

   The control believes the refrigerator is already cold, so it never commands the fan or opens the damper. An inexpensive sensor producing an alarming symptom.

6. 6. Control board not commanding the circuit

   Sensors read correctly and the board still will not run the fan or damper. We confirm with live voltage at the component before quoting a board, because built-in boards are expensive.
