Root causes, ranked by what we find

Most-likely failures (by frequency)

Fresh-food section warm, freezer fine

What it is: Sub-Zero built-ins use two separate cooling systems. A failed evaporator fan, iced-over coil or bad thermistor on the fridge side warms only that section.

Fix: Test fan and sensor, clear the coil, replace the failed part with OEM.

Typical all-in: $385–$685 all-in

Whole unit warming up

What it is: A seized condenser fan or a condenser packed with dust makes the compressor overheat and shut off. Very common on top-mount built-ins.

Fix: Clean the condenser, replace the fan motor, check compressor amp draw.

Typical all-in: $385–$585 all-in

Alarm or error code on the display

What it is: High-temp, condenser and sensor alarms point to specific parts. We read the service-mode history before replacing anything.

Fix: Factory diagnostic mode, then the part the alarm actually points to.

Typical all-in: $385–$785 all-in

Ice maker stopped or leaking

What it is: Inlet valve, frozen fill tube, clogged filter or failed ice maker module.

Fix: Replace valve, fill tube or module; clear the drain.

Typical all-in: $345–$625 all-in

Sealed system: leak or failing compressor

What it is: Rare on Sub-Zero, but possible on older units. Confirmed with pressure testing before any quote.

Fix: Leak repair, compressor or drier replacement, evacuate and recharge.

Typical all-in: $1,200–$2,400, quoted in writing

Diagnostic order

Before you call: Sub-Zero refrigerator checks

  1. 1. Check the display

Note any alarm code or flashing light and the set temperatures. Write them down for the technician.

  2. 2. Look at the grille

On top-mount built-ins, lift the top grille and look for a dusty condenser. Light dust can be vacuumed with the unit turned off.

  3. 3. Listen for the fan

With the unit on, you should hear the condenser fan near the compressor. Silence plus a hot compressor points to a failed fan.

  4. 4. Check the doors

Make sure nothing blocks the doors and gaskets seal flat. A door left ajar triggers high-temperature alarms.

FAQs

Common questions

Is it worth repairing a 15- or 20-year-old Sub-Zero refrigerator?

Usually yes. A typical repair is a small fraction of the cost of a new built-in, and Sub-Zero cabinets and sealed systems are designed for long service lives. We tell you honestly when a unit isn't worth fixing.

How much does Sub-Zero fridge repair cost in the Twin Cities?

The built-in Sub-Zero trip fee is $149 and is credited toward the repair when you approve it. Most Sub-Zero refrigerator repairs run $385–$985 all-in. Sealed-system repairs are quoted in writing after pressure testing.

Are your technicians factory-trained on Sub-Zero?

Yes. Our technicians are factory-trained on Sub-Zero and EPA 608 certified for refrigerant work, and we use OEM parts on Sub-Zero repairs.

Why is my Sub-Zero fridge warm but the freezer is cold?

Most Sub-Zero built-ins have separate fridge and freezer cooling systems. When only the fridge is warm, the usual causes are a failed fresh-food evaporator fan, an iced-over coil or a bad temperature sensor.

Do you repair Sub-Zero wine storage and undercounter drawers too?

Yes. We repair Sub-Zero wine storage columns, undercounter wine units and refrigerator and freezer drawers in addition to full-size refrigerators.

How fast can you get to me?

Our trucks run Minneapolis, Saint Paul and the suburbs every day, so same-day or next-day visits are typical depending on when you call.
