Bail arm position (modular makers)
Whirlpool's modular icemakers (the older white plastic ones with a wire arm) have an ON / OFF position determined by the bail arm. Up = OFF. Down = ON. Cleaning bumps it up about a third of the time we get a no-ice call on these. Confirmed-off bail arm = trip fee only.
Frozen fill tube — WRX / WRF / WRV french-door
On french-door Whirlpool models with the in-door icemaker, the fill tube runs from the back of the freezer over the top of the french door to the maker. If the freezer is set below 0°F, the tube freezes mid-run. Symptoms: 1–2 normal harvests after a thaw, then nothing. Set freezer to +2°F to +5°F (NOT colder), thaw the tube. Long-term fix is sometimes a fill tube heater retrofit kit if your model supports it.
Water inlet valve
Dual-coil solenoid valve at the bottom-rear of the refrigerator. The ice-circuit coil fails open or burned-out — measure ~200 ohms across the coil. Failed coil = no fill = no ice (dispenser may still work). OEM valve $185–$285 installed.
Modular icemaker assembly
The legacy modular maker is a sealed assembly — motor, mold heater, mold thermostat, and shut-off switch all in one. We test by jumpering T-H on the test port to force a harvest cycle. If the maker doesn't cycle, the assembly is shot. Direct replacement $245–$345 OEM. We carry both the W10884390 (most common) and the W10884408 on the truck.
Optics boards (in-door makers)
WRX / WRF in-door makers use an infrared optics pair to sense ice level. Aging LEDs dim, receiver always sees ice, maker pauses indefinitely. Symptoms: ice bucket empty but maker has been silent for weeks. Optics pair $225–$325 installed.
Water filter — fix-once
Whirlpool's Everydrop filters (EDR3RXD1, EDR1RXD1, etc) are rated 6 months. On Twin Cities municipal water, plan on 4–5 months. A restricted filter = small cubes or no cubes. Genuine Everydrop $50–$80 — try this before scheduling.
