Samsung Refrigerator Not Making Ice RF / RS / RT Models — The 6 Real Causes

Samsung French-door fridges (RF22, RF23, RF26, RF27, RF28, RF29 plus the side-by-side RS series) have a well-documented ice-maker problem family — the ice room runs warm, the auger motor fails, the water line freezes inside the door, or the ice bucket flap mis-seats. We service these in the Twin Cities every week and there's a clear diagnostic order that saves you money before any part comes off the truck.

What we fix in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis repair mix

Step 1 — pull the ice bucket and check for a block

On Samsung French-doors, the most common 'no ice' call we run is actually an ice bucket frozen into one solid block from a slow auger or a melt-refreeze cycle. The auger can't break new cubes out because the bucket is one giant ice brick. Pull the bucket, run hot water over it (or hair-dryer it) until empty, dry, replace. Free if that fixes it.

Step 2 — force a harvest cycle with the Test button

Press and hold the Test button on the front of the ice maker (most Samsung modules) for 3 seconds. You should hear water fill, then a harvest cycle within 6 minutes. If water fills but cubes don't drop: ice-room temperature problem. If nothing happens: auger motor or control board.

Ice-room temperature — Samsung's design weakness

Samsung French-door ice rooms only work below ~8°F. When the door gasket leaks or the freezer-to-ice-room duct flap warps, the ice room runs 15–20°F and cubes melt back into a slush block. We test with a thermocouple. Fixes: door gasket replacement ($245–$345), duct-flap kit ($185–$285), or full ice-room insulation kit on the worst-impacted RF28 models ($385–$485).

Auger motor — Samsung-specific failure

The auger motor that pushes cubes out the dispenser fails by year 4–6 on Samsung French-doors. Symptom: ice maker makes cubes (you can pull the bucket and see them), but dispenser does nothing. We carry the OEM auger motor and gear assembly on the truck. $245–$385 installed.

Fill tube freeze — winter-specific

The water fill tube into the ice maker freezes solid when (a) water pressure is low or (b) the ice room is colder than spec. We thaw the tube and test inlet-valve flow rate. If the inlet valve is weak ($185–$245), it leaks slowly, the slow drip freezes in the tube, and the cycle no longer produces ice.

PBA Ice control board

When force-test does nothing and the harness checks good, the PBA Ice board has failed. $385–$585 OEM installed. We always test harness continuity and the auger motor resistance first — replacing the board with a failed motor still attached repeats the failure within weeks.

FAQ

Minneapolis questions, answered

  • How do I reset a Samsung refrigerator ice maker?

Press and hold the Test button on the ice maker module for 3 seconds. You should hear the harvest cycle (water fill + auger turn) within 6 minutes. On models without a Test button, hold the Energy Saver + Lighting buttons together for 8 seconds.

  • Why is my Samsung ice maker frozen into one block?

Either the ice room is running warmer than 8°F (cubes melt and refreeze together) or the auger motor is too weak to break out cubes (they sit and fuse). Pull the bucket, defrost, then run the Test cycle to see which.

  • Is there a class-action settlement on Samsung ice makers?

Yes — the RF refrigerator ice-room issue has been the subject of multiple class actions. Check your model + serial against the latest settlement page before paying for parts. We'll tell you free during the diagnostic.

  • How much to fix a Samsung ice maker?

Most Samsung refrigerator repairs in the Twin Cities land $245–$385 all-in — parts, labor, and the $149 trip fee (which is credited toward the repair when you approve the work). Sealed-system or compressor work runs higher and we always quote that up front. Every job ships with a 1-year written parts-and-labor warranty.

  • Is it worth fixing a 6-year-old Samsung fridge ice maker?

Under $500, yes — a fridge is too expensive to replace over the ice maker alone. We've fixed plenty of 8–10 year RF28s that ran another 5 years after an ice-room rebuild.
