Edina appliance recall lookup questions come up almost every week. Someone reads a post about a Samsung range recall, or hears about an LG fridge fire, or their Miele owner's manual mentions a service bulletin. Here's the exact process a technician uses to check whether your specific appliance has an open recall or extended warranty — and what to do if it does.
For service beyond a recall issue, book appliance repair Edina. Below is the recall-checking process itself.
The two databases that matter
1. CPSC — Consumer Product Safety Commission
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission at cpsc.gov/recalls is the authoritative source for safety recalls on appliances sold in the U.S.
How to search:
- Go to cpsc.gov/recalls
- Search by brand name (e.g., "Whirlpool," "Samsung," "LG")
- Filter by category → "Appliances"
- Review results by date and model
Critical: CPSC lists apply to specific serial/model ranges. Your fridge may share a name with a recalled unit but not fall in the recalled range. Read the affected serial ranges carefully.
2. Brand-specific service bulletin portals
Every major manufacturer maintains an owner-portal recall/bulletin lookup. Access requires the exact model and serial number.
- Sub-Zero: subzero-wolf.com/service → Recall & Service Information
- Wolf: subzero-wolf.com/service (same portal)
- Miele: miele.com/en/m/service.htm → Recall Notices
- Thermador: thermador.com/us/customer-service → Product Recalls
- KitchenAid / Whirlpool / Maytag: whirlpool.com/services/recalls.html
- LG: lg.com/us/support/product-recalls
- Samsung: samsung.com/us/support/service/recall/
- Bosch: bosch-home.com/us/service/recall-information
- GE: geappliances.com/appliance-recall/
Finding your model and serial number
This is where most owners get stuck. Location by appliance type:
- Refrigerator (built-in): inside the fresh food door on the left interior wall
- Refrigerator (freestanding): inside the fresh food door OR behind the bottom drawer
- Range (freestanding): inside the bottom warming drawer or storage drawer
- Range (pro / Wolf): on the side wall of the oven interior, sometimes behind the door
- Cooktop: underneath (visible from cabinet below)
- Wall oven: frame edge with door open, or on side wall
- Dishwasher: on the inner door edge, visible with door open
- Washer/dryer (front-load): on the door frame or behind the drum access panel
- Microwave (built-in): inside the door frame
HowTo — Look up an Edina appliance recall in 5 minutes
- Find the model and serial number using the location list above. Photograph the plate.
- Search CPSC first at cpsc.gov/recalls. Filter to Appliances and search by brand.
- Cross-check the brand portal using the exact model number. Some active bulletins never make it to CPSC.
- Read the affected serial range carefully. Your unit may not be in the recalled range even if the model matches.
- If recalled: follow the brand's remediation process. Most recalls provide free repair, replacement, or refund. Do NOT accept a "partial credit toward new purchase" as your only option — it's usually available but rarely the best choice.
What to do when your unit IS on a recall
If the recall is a safety issue (fire, shock, tip-over):
- Stop using the appliance immediately.
- Contact the brand. Do not attempt DIY remediation.
- Document the notice (screenshot, printed).
- Keep any provided remediation part if the fix is a self-install (rare for safety recalls).
If the recall is a performance / service bulletin:
- You may keep using the appliance subject to the manufacturer's guidance.
- Schedule the free service through the brand's authorized network. Central Minnesota Appliance Repair is an authorized service provider for many manufacturers — we can perform in-warranty recall work directly.
- Do not pay for a service call on a covered recall bulletin.
Common Edina recall history worth knowing
Not exhaustive — but these are the recalls we still see land in Edina kitchens:
- Samsung top-load washers (2010–2015) — top separating during high-spin cycles. Widely remediated but occasional stragglers.
- LG French-door refrigerators with linear compressors (2014–2017) — ER-CO / cooling failure class action; extended warranty settlement.
- Whirlpool / Maytag / KitchenAid dishwasher heating elements (2019 batch) — fire risk on a specific model range.
- Certain GE dishwasher heating elements (older bulletin) — similar risk on older models.
If you have any of these, run the lookup TODAY, not next week.
Extended warranty vs. recall
These are different. Extended warranties are contractual (BestBuy, Assurant, brand-direct); recalls are legal remediation. Some brands offer "extended service programs" that are NEITHER recall nor extended warranty — they're goodwill programs. Ask specifically which one applies to your unit; the answer changes what's covered and how you file.
When we get involved
- Authorized recall service work — many brands route certified in-warranty work through Central Minnesota Appliance Repair for Edina and the Southwest metro.
- Post-recall repair — if the recall remediation didn't fully fix your unit, we can diagnose and repair the remaining issue.
- Pre-recall diagnostics — if you suspect a safety issue but there's no active recall, we can inspect and document (useful for insurance).
