2. Damaged or rusted metal rack supports (over-the-range / built-in)

What it is: Over-the-range and built-in units have metal rack supports that can rust through their porcelain coating or bend if the rack drops. Exposed metal arcs against the cavity wall. Symptom: sparking from the rack-support area, often paired with a popping sound.

Fix: Remove the rack supports, replace OEM kit, or use the microwave without the auxiliary rack until parts arrive.

3. Accidental metal in the cavity — twist ties, gold-rim plates, takeout containers

What it is: Foil scraps, twist ties, plates with gold/silver trim, and some takeout containers with metallic ink will arc within seconds. Symptom: sparking only when running specific items, no damage to the cavity itself.

Fix: Stop and remove the item. Inspect the cavity for scorch marks — if the paint is intact, you're fine. If a spot of paint chipped or burned, treat per cause #4.

4. Chipped paint exposing bare steel on cavity walls

What it is: Microwave interior paint is rated to contain microwaves; bare steel arcs. Chips from utensils, scrub-pad damage, or a fork edge expose steel underneath. Symptom: sparks from the cavity wall (not the mica), small chip or rust spot visible.

Fix: Sand the chip smooth, clean, apply microwave-safe enamel paint, cure 24 hours. Universal touch-up paint sold at parts stores.

What it is: If the mica is intact, the cavity paint is intact, and there's no metal in the food — the magnetron is arcing internally.   1. 1. Unplug the microwave

    Always unplug before inspecting. Even powered off, internal capacitors hold dangerous voltage. The cabinet stays closed — we only look inside the cavity through the open door.

  2. 2. Inspect the waveguide cover (mica on right wall)

    Look at the small rectangular mica sheet on the right interior wall. Scorched, charred, or perforated = cause #1, $8 fix. This is the source ~60% of the time.

  3. 3. Inspect cavity walls for chipped paint or rust spots

    Over-the-range and some built-ins have a wire rack on metal supports. Rust through the porcelain coating or bent supports arc. Replace or remove rack until fixed.
