Quick answer

GE microwave — Quick answer

Most GE microwave repairs run $215–$445 all-in. The flat $149 trip fee is waived when you approve the repair. The most-common GE failure we see is the H97 magnetron-driver-board fault on JVM and PVM OTR units — a single board swap that finishes in 45 minutes. Café and Monogram built-ins justify repair almost every time given the $1,400+ replacement cost.

GE microwave failures

What goes wrong on GE microwaves

GE microwave runs but doesn't heat (H97 magnetron driver)

Most common cause: Failed magnetron-driver board on GE JVM, PVM, JNM, and Profile PVM OTR units — the board commands the high-voltage circuit and a single failed transistor stops the magnetron from firing while everything else (fan, light, turntable) keeps running.

What we do: OEM GE magnetron driver board replacement, then a one-cup water boil test to confirm full output. A failed magnetron itself is less common on GE than on Whirlpool/Maytag — we test before swapping the higher-cost part.

$245–$385 all-in

GE Profile / Café OTR vent fan won't shut off or runs by itself

Most common cause: Stuck humidity / temperature sensor on the underside of the OTR, or a failed relay on the main control board. The sensor reads excess heat from the cooktop and auto-starts the vent fan to protect the unit.

What we do: Clean and re-test the sensor first; replace the sensor or main control board if the false trigger persists. Most repairs finish in one visit.

$215–$345 all-in

GE microwave keypad partially dead or won't respond

Most common cause: Failed touch panel (membrane) or main control board. GE OTRs separate the touch panel from the smart board, so a partial-keypad failure is almost always the touch panel, not the smart board.

What we do: OEM GE touch panel replacement — bench-test every button before closing the unit. Smart board swap only if the panel tests good.

$265–$425 all-in

Monogram / Café built-in microwave or Advantium dead

Most common cause: Blown line fuse (15A ceramic on most GE built-ins), failed thermal cutout on the magnetron or cavity, or a failed door interlock switch shorting the monitor switch and blowing the line fuse. Common after a door slam.

What we do: Discharge the HV capacitor, test all three door interlocks as a set, replace any failed switch and the line fuse together. Never replace the line fuse without testing the switches — it'll blow again.

$235–$385 all-in

GE OTR microwave light won't shut off / stays on

Most common cause: Failed cooktop-light switch on the front of the OTR or a failed relay on the smart board. The light circuit is independent of the cooking circuit, so the microwave still works fine.

What we do: Test the switch first ($45 part); smart board swap only if the switch tests good.

$185–$285 all-in

CodeMeaning
H97Magnetron driver board fault — most common GE OTR failure; board replacement
F3Touch panel / smart board communication fault — touch panel almost always

FAQs

GE microwave repair — common questions

How much does GE microwave repair cost in Minneapolis?

Most GE microwave repairs are $215–$445 all-in (parts + labor + the $149 trip fee, which is credited to the repair). The H97 magnetron-driver-board repair runs $245–$385. Touch panel and main board repairs run higher. Built-in Café/Monogram units cost slightly more due to cabinetry removal.

What does H97 mean on a GE microwave?

H97 is the GE error code for a magnetron driver board fault. The driver board sits inside the microwave cavity and commands the high-voltage circuit. When it fails, the microwave runs (fan + turntable + light) but won't heat. It's a single-board swap — the magnetron itself is usually fine.

Is a GE Profile, Café, or Monogram microwave worth repairing?

Almost always yes. Café OTRs run $700–$1,100 to replace; Monogram built-ins run $1,800–$2,800; Advantium speed-cook units run $1,600+. A typical GE microwave repair is $245–$445. Even basic GE JVM OTRs justify repair if the failure is the H97 driver or a door switch.

Do you service GE Advantium speed-cook ovens?

Yes — Advantium 120 and 240 series, including halogen-bulb replacement, magnetron service, control-board work, and sensor-cook humidity sensor replacement. Advantium repairs are more involved than a basic OTR and we quote in writing before any work.

Do you carry OEM GE microwave parts on the truck?

Yes — H97 magnetron driver boards, OEM GE magnetrons, door switches (interlock + secondary + monitor), HV diodes, HV capacitors, touch panels, smart boards, line fuses, turntable motors, and Advantium halogen bulbs are all stocked across the most-common GE OTR and built-in models.

Will you replace my Café or Monogram built-in microwave instead?

We only repair — but we'll tell you the truth when a repair doesn't pencil out. About 95% of Café and Monogram microwave calls are worth repairing because of the high replacement cost and the cabinetry work involved in swapping a built-in.

Do you offer a warranty on GE microwave repairs?

Yes — every repair includes a 1-year written parts-and-labor warranty. If the same failure returns within 12 months we come back free.
