Deep dive

Frigidaire Affinity Tub Bearing Failure — Repair or Replace?

The single most common reason a Frigidaire Affinity front-load gets called “loud” on a Twin Cities service call is a failed rear tub bearing and shaft seal. You'll hear a deep grinding howl that gets dramatically louder during spin, plus visible rust streaks weeping from the back of the outer tub. By the time most homeowners call, water is already dripping onto the motor below.

  • Symptom progression: rumble on spin → metal-on-metal howl → rust streaks at the rear tub → drips during fill.
  • What we replace: tub seal, bearing kit, shaft, and (often) the outer tub itself on heavily worn units.
  • Time on site: 3–4 hours; the outer tub has to come out. Single visit when parts are on the truck.
  • Honest repair-vs-replace: on Affinity washers older than 6 years we usually recommend replacement — Electrolux has discontinued some OEM parts and the labor doesn't pencil out. Under 6 years and we'll quote the bearing job in writing before we touch a wrench.

Catching it early matters — once water reaches the motor, the repair stops penciling out on almost every Affinity. Call (651) 364-7466 the moment you hear the grinding.

Frigidaire Affinity vs Current Front-Loads — How Repairs Differ

Most Twin Cities homes run either an older Frigidaire Affinity front-load or a current FFFW / FFFS / FLCE platform. The two fail in very different ways — here's what we see across thousands of in-home calls:

How to Clear a Frigidaire Dishwasher i20 (Drain Fault) Code

i20 means your Frigidaire dishwasher couldn't drain within the expected time. Roughly half the calls we run for this code turn out to be a clogged filter, kinked drain hose, or a disposal knockout plug that was never removed — try this first before you book a visit.

  1. Cut power. Turn off the dishwasher at the breaker before reaching inside.
  2. Pull the filter. Twist the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub counter-clockwise and lift it out with the fine mesh below it.
  3. Clean the sump. Wipe food, glass, and debris from the sump and rinse the filter under running water.
  4. Check the drain hose under the sink for a kink, and confirm the disposal knockout plug was removed when it was installed (a brand-new disposal is a classic culprit).
  5. Reset: restore power, run a short Rinse cycle. If i20 returns, the drain pump or impeller has failed — that's a tech visit.

Still throwing the code? Call (651) 364-7466 and we'll bring an OEM drain pump on the truck.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Frigidaire Appliance Repair

  • Do you repair Frigidaire appliances near me?

Yes. Central Minnesota Appliance Repair provides Frigidaire appliance repair throughout Minneapolis, St. Paul, the Twin Cities metro, Central Minnesota, and Western Wisconsin. Call (651) 364-7466 with your city, appliance type, model number, and symptom to confirm a same-day window.

  • What Frigidaire appliances do you repair?

We repair Frigidaire refrigerators, freezers, ice makers, washers (Affinity and current FFFW/FFFS), gas and electric dryers, Gallery and Professional dishwashers, and gas/electric/induction ranges and wall ovens. Built-in and pro-style configurations welcome.

  • Do you still repair the older Frigidaire Affinity washer?

Yes — Affinity front-loads (ATF, FAFW, AEQ) are still common in the Twin Cities and we handle the full repair list: rear tub-bearing rebuilds, E5C/E5E door-lock faults, drain pump and bellow service, and main-control replacements. We'll be honest about whether the bearing job pencils out — under about 6 years old it usually does, older than that we'll lay out repair vs. replace before you commit.

  • What does a Frigidaire diagnostic cost?

Flat diagnostic is $129 for standard appliances, $149 for refrigerators and freezers, and $179 for built-in or pro-style Gallery / Professional units. The diagnostic fee is waived when you approve the repair.

  • Do you use genuine Frigidaire (Electrolux) OEM parts?

Yes — every truck is stocked with OEM Frigidaire / Electrolux parts for the most-failed components on FFTR, FGHB, Affinity, FFFW, FFCD, and FGEF platforms. We don't substitute aftermarket parts on warranty repairs and we'll always tell you in writing if a part is OEM versus an authorized equivalent.

  • What does the SY EF code mean on my Frigidaire refrigerator?

SY EF means the evaporator fan motor circuit has failed — typically a seized fan motor, a broken wire harness, or a failed main control. The fridge will start warming because cold air isn't being moved across the evaporator. It's a tech visit; call (651) 364-7466 and we'll bring an OEM evap fan on the truck.

  • Why does my Frigidaire dishwasher keep showing i30?

i30 is a leak-detected fault — the basepan float under the dishwasher tripped because water reached the bottom of the cabinet. Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher, don't run it again, and call us. The leak source is almost always the sump gasket, drain hose, door gasket, or a cracked spray arm — all repairable on a single visit.

  • What is your warranty on Frigidaire repairs?

Every completed Frigidaire repair carries a 1-year parts-and-labor warranty in writing. Same failure inside the year, we come back free of charge.

  • How fast can you schedule Frigidaire appliance repair?

Same-day Frigidaire appliance repair is usually available when you call before 2pm on a weekday. Calls placed earlier in the day have the best chance of a same-day window in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and nearby Twin Cities suburbs.

  • Is Frigidaire repair worth it, or should I replace?

Under about 8 years old (12 for Gallery / Professional built-ins) repair almost always wins. For older units or expensive failures — sealed-system refrigerator work, full EOC oven boards on entry-level ranges, Affinity tub bearings past year 6 — we'll lay out the repair quote against a realistic replacement number in plain language. We don't push repairs that don't make sense.

What Twin Cities customers say about our Frigidaire repairs

  • ★★★★★

Our Frigidaire Gallery French-door fridge threw SY EF and started warming up overnight. Tech came same afternoon, had the evaporator fan motor on the truck, and we were back to spec in under an hour. Diagnostic was waived once we approved.

    Brian H.Minneapolis, MN

  • ★★★★★

Old Affinity washer was howling on spin. They were upfront — at 9 years old the bearing rebuild wasn't worth it, and they told me so before doing any work. Charged the flat diagnostic, gave me an honest repair-vs-replace breakdown, no upsell.

    Theresa M.Saint Paul, MN

  • ★★★★★

Frigidaire Professional dishwasher kept locking up with i20. Tech cleared the drain, replaced the pump, and walked me through how to prevent it. Clean work, fair price, and the 1-year warranty is in writing.
