Washer and Dryer Repair Guide (2026)

A washer that won't drain is almost always a clogged drain pump ($245–$345). A washer that won't spin is a bad door lock ($185–$285) or a worn drive belt / motor coupler ($215–$385). A dryer that won't heat is a blown thermal fuse ($185–$245), a failed heating element ($245–$345), or a bad gas valve ($285–$425). Most laundry appliances under 8 years old with a repair under $400 are worth fixing. Trip fee is $149 residential, credited toward the approved repair. Every completed repair carries a 1-year written parts-and-labor warranty.

Root causes, ranked by what we find

Most-likely failures (by frequency)

Washer won't drain or spin

What it is: Water sits in the drum at the end of the cycle, or the cycle finishes but clothes are soaking wet. Root cause is a clogged drain pump (coins, socks, hair-tie debris), a failed drain pump motor, a bad door lock / lid switch (won't let the machine advance to spin), or a broken drive belt.

Fix: Pull the pump filter (front-load) or the drain hose (top-load) and clear debris. Test lid switch and door-lock continuity. Replace pump, lock, or belt as needed.

Typical all-in: $185–$385

Washer leaks water on the floor

What it is: Water on the floor during fill, wash, or spin. Root cause is a torn door bellows (front-load), a cracked drain hose, a failed fill-valve solenoid, a loose pump-to-tub hose clamp, or a cracked outer tub (usually a replace decision).

Fix: Isolate the leak by running a fill-only cycle with the panel off. Replace bellows, hoses, or fill valve. Cracked outer tubs are a $600+ repair — usually replace.

Typical all-in: $185–$525

Front-load washer shakes violently in spin

What it is: Front-load washer walks across the floor, bangs the wall, or throws an unbalanced-load error. Root cause is a worn shock absorber set, a broken suspension spring, a bad rotor-position sensor (Whirlpool Cabrio / Maytag Bravos UL / F51), or a failed bearing / spider assembly.

Fix: Test shocks by hand-lifting the tub. Replace shock kit, springs, or RPS. Bearing / spider failure on the outer tub is a $685–$985 job — usually replace on units over 10 years old.

Typical all-in: $245–$985

Dryer runs but doesn't heat

What it is: Dryer tumbles and airflow feels normal but clothes stay wet. Root cause is a blown thermal fuse (packed vent tripped the safety), a failed heating element (electric), a bad gas valve or igniter (gas), a failed high-limit thermostat, or a bad heat-relay on the control.

Fix: Test thermal-fuse continuity first (free 10-min diagnostic). Clear the vent path before installing a new fuse or element — otherwise it fails again inside 6 months. Replace element or gas-valve coil kit as needed.

Typical all-in: $185–$425

Dryer takes two cycles to dry a load

What it is: Clothes come out damp after a full cycle. Root cause is almost always a packed vent (lint accumulated in the vent hose or exterior hood), a stuck vent damper, or a partially failed heating element (heats intermittently). A collapsed foil / plastic vent hose behind the dryer is common.

Fix: Clean the vent from the dryer connection to the exterior hood, replace the vent hose with rigid or semi-rigid, and verify hood-damper travel. Test element amp draw if problem persists.

Typical all-in: $85 vent clean · $245–$345 element

Washer or dryer error code on the display

What it is: Front-load Whirlpool: F21 (no drain), F35 (analog pressure), rF (radio-frequency ID mismatch). LG: LE (rotor position), OE (drain), UE (unbalance). Samsung: 4E (fill), DC (unbalance), 5E (drain). Whirlpool Cabrio / Maytag Bravos: UL, F51 (rotor-position sensor).

Fix: Decode the specific code, isolate the sensor / component, and replace. Most code-driven repairs are $185–$385 — the code names the failed part.

Typical all-in: $185–$425

Loud grinding, thumping, or squealing

What it is: Squeal on tumble (dryer) is a bad drum roller, idler pulley, or belt. Grinding at spin (washer) is a bad tub bearing or a worn drive coupler. Thumping on start (top-load washer) is a broken suspension rod or a bad drive block.

Fix: Match the noise to the cycle stage: fill vs wash vs spin, or tumble vs heat vs cool-down. Replace the specific worn component.

Typical all-in: $185–$525

Diagnostic order

How to diagnose a dryer that won't heat

  1. 1. Confirm the dryer runs (tumbles + airflow)

If the drum doesn't spin, it's a belt / motor / start-switch problem — not a heat problem. If it tumbles but doesn't heat, continue.

  2. 2. Check the vent path first, before any parts

Disconnect the vent hose at the back of the dryer and run for 5 minutes. If it heats now, the vent is packed — clean it end-to-end before doing anything else. Packed vents trip thermal fuses and prematurely fail heating elements.

  3. 3. Test the thermal fuse for continuity

The thermal fuse is a one-shot safety on the blower housing. If it's open (no continuity), the vent path was blocked and the safety did its job. Replace the fuse only after clearing the vent, or the new fuse fails inside 6 months.

  4. 4. Test the heating element (electric) or igniter / gas valve (gas)

Electric elements read 8–12 ohms across the coils; open circuit means replace. Gas dryers use a hot-surface igniter that must glow orange within 30 seconds of a heat call — if it doesn't glow, replace the igniter. If it glows but no gas ignites, replace the gas-valve coil kit.

FAQs

Common questions

How much does washer repair cost in 2026?

Standard-brand washer repairs (Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire) run $185–$465 all-in. LG and Samsung front-load drain-pump / motor work runs $245–$385. Cabrio / Bravos rotor-position sensor: $285–$425. Front-load bearing / spider (Whirlpool Duet, LG WM, Samsung front-load): $685–$985 — usually a replace decision. Bosch / Miele front-loads run $325–$625. Trip fee is $149, credited toward the repair.

How much does dryer repair cost in 2026?

Standard-brand dryer repairs run $185–$385 all-in for the common failures (element, thermal fuse, igniter, thermostat, belt). Motor and drum-bearing repairs run $325–$465. Gas-valve coil kits: $285–$385. Vent cleaning (recommended annually): $85–$125 standalone or bundled with any repair. Trip fee is $149, credited toward the repair.

How long should a washer and dryer last?

Modern front-load washers are engineered for 10–13 years. Top-load washers (Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG) run 11–14 years. Speed Queen and commercial-grade top-loads routinely run 20+ years. Electric dryers last 13–17 years; gas dryers 15–20 years. Miele W1 / T1 sets often run 20+ years with periodic service.

Should I repair or replace my washer?

Use the 50% rule. If the quoted repair is over 50% of a comparable new washer AND the machine is over 10 years old, lean toward replacement. Drain-pump and door-lock repairs under $400 on any washer under 10 years old are almost always worth doing. Bearing / spider assembly repairs ($685+) on units over 8 years old usually lose to replacement.

My dryer is loud — is it worth fixing?

Yes, almost always. Drum rollers, idler pulleys, and belts are $185–$285 repairs and give the dryer 5–8 more good years. A loud dryer left alone eventually damages the drum, the blower, or the motor bearings — cheaper to fix the noise early.

Why does my LG washer show LE?

LE on an LG front-load or top-load is a rotor-position / motor-lock error. Root cause is usually the Hall-effect sensor on the stator, a bad stator, or an overloaded / unbalanced tub locking up the rotor. Diagnostic is straightforward — the code names the sensor, and the repair is $245–$385.

What's a UL or F51 code on a Whirlpool Cabrio or Maytag Bravos?

Rotor-position sensor. The stator can't detect the rotor because the RPS ring on the bottom of the tub has failed, has debris in it, or the shifter actuator isn't engaging. Cabrio / Bravos UL / F51 is a $285–$425 repair — almost never a bad main control, despite what generic troubleshooting pages will tell you.

How often should I clean the dryer vent?

Annually at minimum, twice a year if you dry heavy items (comforters, towels, pet bedding) or if the run to the exterior hood is longer than 15 feet. A packed vent trips thermal fuses, extends dry time, cooks heating elements, and is the leading cause of dryer-fire incidents. Vent cleaning is $85–$125 and takes 45 minutes.

Do you service stackable and combo washer / dryer units?

Yes. LG WashTower and single-unit combos, Samsung stackable pairs, Whirlpool Duet and Cabrio stacks, Miele W1 / T1 stacks — all serviced with the same $149 trip fee. Access on stacked pairs takes an extra 15–20 minutes but repair pricing is identical.

Do you work on Speed Queen commercial-grade washers?

Yes. Speed Queen residential and light-commercial top-loads (TR, TC, AWNE series) and front-loads (FF, FR series) are among our most common laundry service calls. Speed Queen mechanical timers, drive belts, and gearbox seals are all truck-stock. These machines are designed to be repaired indefinitely and almost always beat replacement.
