Quick answer

Dishwasher Repair Guide (2026)

A dishwasher that stops working is almost always one of five things: a clogged drain pump or filter ($185–$345 repaired), a failed wash motor or circulation pump ($325–$525), a stuck water inlet valve ($215–$325), a Bosch E:15 leak-pan / float fault ($245–$385), or a bad control board ($285–$465). Most dishwashers under 8 years old with a repair under $400 are worth fixing. Trip fee is $149 residential, credited toward any approved repair. Every completed repair includes a 1-year written parts-and-labor warranty.

Root causes, ranked by what we find

Most-likely failures (by frequency)

Dishwasher not draining (standing water)

What it is: Water pools in the bottom of the tub at the end of the cycle. Root cause is a clogged filter or sump (food debris), a jammed drain pump impeller, a kinked or backed-up drain hose, or a blocked garbage-disposal air-gap knockout on a new install.

Fix: Pull and clean the filter, check the drain hose loop, and if the pump hums but no water moves, replace the drain pump.

Typical all-in: $185–$345

Dishes come out dirty

What it is: Food film, spots, or gritty residue on dishes at the end of a full cycle. Root cause is a clogged filter, a stopped wash motor / chopper assembly, a bad inlet valve (low fill), spray-arm bearings that stopped spinning, or the water heater feeding the dishwasher runs cold (needs 120°F+).

Fix: Clean the filter and chopper, verify spray-arm rotation, and confirm fill volume. Replace the wash motor if the impeller doesn't spin under power.

Typical all-in: $185–$465

Bosch E:15 error (leak sensor tripped)

What it is: Bosch 300/500/800 series (and Benchmark) trip E:15 when water hits the base-pan float. Root cause is a water leak from the sump gasket, wash-motor seal, or inlet-valve solenoid — or condensation dripping from a cold pan on a very old install.

Fix: Dry the base pan, reset, and stress-test. If E:15 returns, find the leak source: sump gasket ($245), wash-motor seal ($385–$525), or inlet valve ($285). Replace the failed part and re-test.

Typical all-in: $245–$525

Water leaking under the dishwasher

What it is: Water on the floor after every cycle. Root cause is a torn door gasket, a cracked door seal at the bottom, a leaking pump-to-motor seal, a failed inlet-valve solenoid, or a hose-clamp that loosened over time.

Fix: Isolate the leak with a mid-cycle inspection. Door gaskets and seals are direct swaps; pump seals require pump-motor removal.

Typical all-in: $215–$525

Dishwasher won't start or cycle stalls

What it is: Panel unresponsive, cycle starts and quits, or the dishwasher runs forever. Root cause is the door latch / lock, a failed thermistor (thinks water never heats), a bad control board, or a keypad membrane with a stuck button.

Fix: Test the door latch first (free diagnostic). Replace latch, thermistor, or control board depending on which fails.

Typical all-in: $185–$465

Dishes not drying at the end of the cycle

What it is: Dishes come out wet even on the Heated Dry cycle. Root cause is a burned-out heating element (in tank-heater models), a bad rinse-aid dispenser (spot / dry additive), or a failed vent motor / damper that keeps humidity trapped in the tub.

Fix: Test heating-element continuity, refill rinse aid, and cycle the vent damper. Replace the element or vent motor.

Typical all-in: $215–$385

Loud grinding or humming during wash

What it is: Grinding is almost always the chopper assembly (food debris jammed against the impeller) or a bearing failure in the circulation pump. Humming with no water movement is the drain-pump impeller jammed.

Fix: Pull the chopper and clean, replace bearings on the wash motor, or replace the drain-pump assembly.

Typical all-in: $185–$525

Diagnostic order

How to diagnose a dishwasher that won't drain

  1. 1. Bail out standing water and pull the filter

Sponge or baster out any standing water in the sump. Pull the coarse and fine filters, rinse them under hot water, and clear the sump grate of food debris.

  2. 2. Check the drain hose loop and the air-gap knockout

The drain hose must loop up under the countertop before feeding the disposal or air gap — otherwise standing water siphons back in. On new installs, the disposal air-gap knockout inside the disposal inlet is a common blocker.

  3. 3. Listen for the drain pump on a drain-only command

Force a drain cycle (model-specific button combo, usually holding Cancel). If the drain pump hums but no water moves, the impeller is jammed or the pump is failed. If the pump doesn't hum at all, the control board or wiring has failed.

  4. 4. Replace or clear the drain pump

Pump replacement is a straightforward under-tub job on Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, and Frigidaire ($185–$285 in parts). Bosch drain pumps are quarter-turn locks accessible from under the tub. Test the check-valve and the drain solenoid before condemning the pump.

FAQs

Common questions

How much does dishwasher repair cost in 2026?

Standard-brand dishwasher repairs (Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire) run $185–$465 all-in. Bosch dishwasher repairs run $245–$525 because the wash motor is a sealed assembly and E:15 diagnosis takes extra time. Miele runs $325–$625 (OEM-only, non-stock parts). Trip fee is $149 residential, credited toward any approved repair.

Is a Bosch dishwasher worth repairing?

Yes, in most cases. Bosch dishwashers are engineered for 12–15 years and fail less often than any other major brand. A $385 wash-motor seal repair on an 8-year-old Bosch 500 or 800 series is almost always better than a $1,200 replacement — the machine has 4–7 more good years in it. E:15 fault repairs are usually the sump gasket or inlet valve, not the wash motor.

Why does my Bosch dishwasher keep throwing E:15?

E:15 is a leak-detection fault — the safety float in the base pan detected water. Real causes are the sump gasket, wash-motor mechanical seal, or inlet-valve solenoid dripping into the pan. False triggers happen when condensation from a cold basement or an over-filled tub reaches the float. Dry the pan, reset, and if E:15 comes back inside 24 hours, it's a real leak.

How long should a dishwasher last?

Bosch and Miele are engineered for 12–15+ years. KitchenAid, Whirlpool, and Maytag last 10–13 years. GE, Frigidaire, LG, and Samsung typically run 8–11 years before a first significant repair. Miele, when maintained, routinely runs 20+ years.

Can I use aftermarket parts on my dishwasher?

On Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, GE, Frigidaire, LG, and Samsung — quality-rated aftermarket parts are acceptable on filters, spray arms, upper-rack adjusters, drum rollers, and some pumps. Wash motors, control boards, and inverter boards should be OEM. On Bosch and Miele — OEM only. Aftermarket parts often don't seal correctly on the Bosch sump and are a leading cause of return E:15 faults.

Why are my dishes coming out with white film?

Two causes: hard-water calcium deposits (Anoka County / Twin Cities suburbs run 12–20 grains and need rinse aid + regular Affresh / dishwasher-cleaner treatment) or a stopped chopper / wash motor circulating dirty water back onto the dishes. Test with citric-acid cleaner on an empty cycle — if the film disappears, it's water hardness. If not, it's a mechanical repair.

Should I repair or replace my dishwasher?

Use the 50% rule. If the quoted repair is over 50% of a comparable new unit AND the dishwasher is over 10 years old, lean toward replacement. Bosch and Miele almost always beat the rule — repair. Sub-$400 repairs on any brand under 8 years old are worth doing. Multiple $300+ repairs on the same unit in 24 months means it's time.

Do you service dishwashers under manufacturer warranty?

We are an independent service company, not a factory-authorized warranty servicer. Dishwashers inside the original manufacturer warranty should go through the brand's own dispatch. Once the base warranty expires we are usually the better-value option for the same factory-trained work.

Why is my dishwasher running for 3+ hours?

Modern dishwashers with sensor / Eco cycles routinely run 2:30–3:15. That's normal — they use less water and extend the cycle to compensate. A dishwasher that runs 4+ hours has a heating problem (thermistor or heating element) or a stuck cycle logic. Skip Eco / Sensor cycles for a real diagnostic — run the express or heavy cycle.

Does the dishwasher heat its own water?

Some brands do (Bosch, Miele, KitchenAid), some rely on the incoming water temperature (Whirlpool, GE, most Samsung and LG). Incoming water to the dishwasher should be 120°F+. If your water heater is set too low or the dishwasher is a long run from the heater, dishes will come out dirty regardless of dishwasher health. Run the sink for 30 seconds before starting to prime hot water.
