1. Failed oven temperature sensor / RTD (most common, $195–$285 fix)
What it is: The thumb-sized stainless probe on the back wall of the oven cavity reports cavity temperature to the control board. When the RTD drifts, the oven over- or under-shoots by 50–100°F and often wanders mid-bake. Symptom: cake collapses, roast comes out raw or burnt, oven thermometer disagrees with set temp by more than 35°F. Affects every brand — Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, Samsung, LG, Bosch, Maytag.
Fix: Replace OEM temperature sensor (single Phillips screw, 2-pin harness disconnect). 20-minute repair. We verify resistance against the OEM spec curve before closing the call.
Typical all-in: $195–$285 all-in
2. Calibration offset (5-minute DIY in service mode)
What it is: Every modern oven supports a calibration offset of ±35°F to correct minor drift. If your oven runs 15–25°F cold consistently and the sensor reads within spec, the offset is the fix. Symptom: thermometer consistently low or high by a small amount, no wandering.
Fix: Enter calibration mode (varies by brand — Whirlpool holds Bake + 350 for 3 seconds, GE has a Calibrate button in settings, Samsung is in user options). Adjust offset. No parts.
Typical all-in: DIY · $0
3. Bake element open or weak (bottom of food undercooked)
What it is: The lower bake element (a glowing horseshoe at the bottom of the cavity in electric ovens) opens internally — sometimes visibly burned through, sometimes not. Symptom: oven preheats slowly, bottom of cookies / casseroles doesn't brown, broil works fine. Electric ovens only.
Fix: Replace OEM bake element. Two screws at the back of the cavity, push-on terminals. 15-minute repair.
Typical all-in: $215–$305 all-in
4. Broil element open (top of food doesn't brown)
What it is: Upper broil element opens. Symptom: bake works, broil produces no sear, top of casseroles doesn't brown.
Fix: Replace OEM broil element. Same access pattern as bake — 15 minutes.
Typical all-in: $215–$305 all-in
5. Door gasket compromised (oven loses 50°F+ during long bakes)
What it is: A torn or hardened door gasket lets cavity heat leak around the door. Symptom: oven hits set temp but loses heat fast during long bakes; convection fan runs more; uneven browning side-to-side. Common on units 6+ years old.
Fix: Replace OEM door gasket — perimeter rubber/woven seal. 30-minute repair. Verify door hinges still pull the door square against the gasket.
Typical all-in: $185–$265 all-in
6. Convection fan slow or failed (uneven browning, true-convection units)
What it is: True-convection and European-style ovens (Bosch, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid Pro) circulate hot air with a rear fan + heating element. Bearings seize or the motor windings short. Symptom: hot spots, food browns unevenly side-to-side, audible bearing whine from the back wall.
Fix: Replace OEM convection fan motor + bearing kit. 45-minute repair (rear cavity panel removal).
Typical all-in: $285–$385 all-in
